Act IV, Chapter Fifty Two "Game 179" (08/11/2025)

Whilst the drinking and post fight celebrations continue inside Lotty is patrolling with a summoned construct when Silas finds her. As they talk they realise they were both overcome with a feeling of regret during that fight, Silas opens open about his feelings and how difficult it can be to keep hope alive. Lotty sympathises but manages to stay quiet about her own feelings saying the dead should stay buried.

As Silas goes back in Cade comes out and the two old friends, Lotty & Cade, have their own version of a heart to heart. Cade, still unable to workout why the dossier on him said he is socially awkward, abruptly leaves the conversation to mix some more drinks at the bar.

Silas makes sure to check in on Berrick. Ever the soul of the group Silas makes sure that everyone is doing ok. The merriment continues and Null eventually comes round to join in.

In an escalation of the sibling rivalry-esque love-hate relationship Flynn & Null have there's fisticuffs in the bar and Flynn someone manages to turn his prosthetic hand to taffy (it may have been the result of a wild magic surge from when Flynn polymorphed he & Lotty in to Solars that had been forgotten about but we'll say it's a now thing). Lotty's pissed when she can't greater restoration it back to a solid hand again.

Eventually, having established that Shoshana will meet them at Ezra's island to support the fight, Berrick teleports the Ashen Company back to Ezra's so the Ashen Company can spend some time with with loved ones and allies before they take the fight to Calitrax (and Cade grows Flynn a new hand!).

--------------------------------------------

And that, dear reader, will be the anticlimactic place this format of the story will end. Whilst our brave heroes do not deserve such an unfitting ending; such are the whims of ones with power to upend the narrative.

A True Ashen Company ending will prevail in time...

Act IV, Chapter 51: "Undead Bar Brawl... then drunkenness" (2025/11/01)

Cade's log: Winterapex 13th, 29ACD

Conditions: Dark with unnatural fog, 20% chance of rain.  Waxing gibbous moon.

The rest of the party had run forward as I attempted to defend our rear flank with no party members in sight.  The undead horde attacked me so fast with blades and magic I felt as if I might fail a few days sooner than anticipated.  I knew Lotty had fallen in the next room because of hearing a goblin scream over the sound of battle, likely from the same attacks overtaking me.  While I have a deep friendship and respect for our leader, Flynn's devotion and reverence for her does not seem normal.

As I was bracing for the next volley of attacks Silas burst into the room.  I had thought he stayed behind to deal with preparations for the future attack, but I was happy to see his fiery form enter.  From a few well-placed strikes, the battle, at least in this room, had turned.

Null brought Lotty’s body back into the room we were in and someone with some magic got her breathing again.  I could not see Flynn, as he was still in the other room, but from the look on Null’s face he was still fighting there, and it did not look good.  Null dashed forward then quickly returned and was very bloody.  Did she take a hit defening Flynn?  Contrary to what Flynn says, I never thought Null would eat any of our souls, but her protecting Flynn was a good sign that there is some connection to her “innocence” still.

Berrick popped out of nowhere, was he here the whole time?!?, and sent some magic Flynn’s way also.  And ultimately, we prevailed and the evil aura over this place dissipated, and we found it to be a nice tavern.

Everyone was a little melancholy after the battle as we rested by the fireplace, even though we just had a victory against a powerful foe, everyone, myself included, felt oddly guilty.  They all claimed everything is their fault, however, we know it is mine.  I tried to help Null’s guilt by sending Innocence another message that we are her family and we love her.

Flynn checked in with the magic ship. Her real name is Shoshana and she wanted to sail on her own for a bit but will come give us a ride if we ask.  Hopefully she will stop hurting us if we touch her now.

We searched the tavern for treasures or clues and found a pile of papers in a private party room.  There were navigational charts, a map of Altisha, dossiers of the Ashen Company, and a rum-stained note in Abyssal.  Null tells me that the note says to "Continue to observe the tower - let me know when they move. I will prepare the harbor."  The note is signed "S.S." which Null thinks is Sarni.  We will need to watch out if we enter Sierrona through the harbor as it is likely a trap.

The dossiers:

These discussed our capabilities and also our mental strengths and weaknesses:

Flynn: A powerful caster, chaotic and unpredictable. His arrogance can be used against him, to isolate and trap him.

Null: Can move unseen. Ghost Walk gives lots of mobility. Really powerful in single combat, but she has no AoE. Attack with force to overwhelm.

Cade: Wildshape and other druidic abilities make him a formidable opponent, but his lack of prowess with social cues and skills can be exploited. (Personal note: these clearly are not accurate as the person who wrote them obviously has never met me)

Silas: The paladin wields Flare and is dangerous up close. Keep at a distance. He lacks a keen mind, so he may be vulnerable if given a lot of saving throws.

Berrik: Prolific caster, especially skilled at spell placement. Not effective in melee. Get in close to overwhelm.

Lotty (as interpreted by Flynn): Perfect, no notes. Literally the greatest person ever to exist. (Personal note: I am not sure Flynn reads Abyssal and may have made this up)

We discussed settling down there if we survive the upcoming fight with Calitrax.  It was nice to hear us talk about it in those terms, but I could hear some fear in people’s voices knowing what we are up against.  No matter how that fight goes, with my current state of deterioration I am not sure I will be around.

To keep him in that upbeat mood, I tried my hand at making some drinks.  My first concoction was Faerie Fireball.  A delicious cinnamon whiskey made with a touch of Fey magic.  Although I am worried that if anyone hiccups, burps, or farts, as organics often do, that they will emit a small shimmering cloud.

By the time I get to the main bar, it is clear that Null and Flynn have already got into the darkest rum they could find and are very intoxicated (although once again I am not sure if Flynn is pretending or not).  Null asks him if they are friends and Flynn opens up to her that she is the only one whom he feels he can really talk to.  It was a sweet moment that I think Flynn was being genuine with.  Then they started talking about ways to scam people by making wigs of Null’s hair, and I stopped paying attention.

I noticed that Lotty had left and recalled she did not like to see people drink.  After passing off the Faerie Fireball to Flynn and Null, I made Lotty a new non-alcholic drink just for her: The Goodberry Sprits!  This bubbly concoction tastes great, heals you, and you won’t get those drunk munchies I expect Null and Flynn to have soon.

Just as I am ready to bring it out to Lotty, I see Silas sneaking out the door to go talk with her.

Act IV, Chapter Fifty "The Mourning Tide won't turn" (25/10/2025)

As Null gets around 500 ft from the ship her vision tunnels and she feels the same sensation she felt in Azher territory. Her skin freezes while her blood burns. It’s unnerving but familiar.

Berrick is busted out of the bug form he was clinging onto Null in after taking a massive smack of necrotic damage to the face. The hit leaves him vulnerable to necrotic damage, meaning he’ll take double the punishment from now on. One by one everyone else who passes through feels the same curse settle over them.

Cade rolls off the carpet and wildshapes into a Solar. Flynn takes the cue and polymorphs himself and Lotty into Solars too for their turn to take the same necromantic blast to the face as they close in on the ship.

Whenever anyone but Null touches the vessel they get the same necrotic whack to the chops. After a bit of digging Null finds the rope ladders and rigging thrown over the side; someone boarded or left in a hurry.

Cade swims down and spots a plume of sand to the east, a cloudy trail twisting through the water like smoke. The seabed is disturbed, maybe footprints, maybe drag marks there's furrows cut through the silt and sand as though something moved across it. The trail runs directly between the boat and the coastline. Whatever left it didn’t swim; it walked.

Meanwhile Flynn reaches out telepathically and learns the ship’s name: Mourning Tide. She speaks slowly and solemnly, explaining that she serves the will of her crew, who have since gone to port after realising they were being pursued.

The ship offers Flynn a place among her undead crew below deck and also indicates that Null is a potential candidate too - which explains why she’s the only one not being harmed by the ship’s necrotic wards. Flynn accepts the invitation, only to realise too late that it’s a trap. The moment he crosses the threshold necrotic energy rips through him, killing him instantly. Cade is still underwater at the time, following the trail of sand, so Berrick, Lotty and Null rush to the grate where Flynn vanished. Mordecai’s magic refuses to let him go, and as Berrick and Lotty drag him back from the brink he clings to life while downing healing potions, Lotty hanging on to him for dear life.

Later, when Null speaks with the ship, Mourning Tide explains that Null’s strange immunity is due to her connection with the undead - something the ship recognises instinctively.

Cade rejoins the Ashen Company aboard Mourning Tide before they make for port, ready to face whatever waits onshore.

Once ashore Null uses her cloak of invisibility and her Ghost Walk ability to scout ahead, slipping unseen through walls into what appears to be the crew’s hideout. It’s a ramshackle place with a kitchen, a bar and the sound of ghostly swashbucklers drifting through the walls. She listens at doors, unseen, before returning to report what she’s found.

A stealthy approach is vaguely attempted but doesn’t last long. The moment a plan is needed blades are drawn the bar erupts into chaos. Ghostly pirates swarm in from every direction, dealing double necrotic damage while the Company’s healing magic is halved. Lotty and Flynn, still under the sadistic after-effects of a wild magic surge, throw themselves into the fight, laughing through the pain. Flynn casts Maddening Darkness, engulfing part of the tavern in swirling shadows. Lotty’s Spirit Guardians flare beside Cade’s own radiant warding magic. Berrick, invisible, fires precise shots through the melee while Null weaves between enemies with her blade flashing. Cade, now in wildshape as a massive owlbear, casts a radiant sunburst in juxtaposition to Flynn's darkness.

Silas remains behind at Ezra’s tower, blissfully unaware of the chaos at sea, busy planning a party.

The battle is only beginning, but the Ashen Company are in their element.

Act IV, Chapter Forty Nine "Peace over Power" (11/10/2025)

Flynn uses telepathy to speak with the helmet. It answers telling Flynn he has failed. Flynn reminds it that it is a helmet and maybe shouldn't be too judgy. When he asks if it knows where it is, the voice replies that it rests in a white void.

He goes to Berrick, arguing that as a medium able to commune with and command spirits he should be immune to the helmet’s corruption. To prove his point, Flynn hands over every item he carries that houses a sentient spirit, asking Berrick to verify his claim. Berrick identifies each one but concludes that the risk is impossible to measure. No guarantee, no safety.

The void Flynn describes matches the Tower’s storage chamber, so Berrick travels there and uses Exaltium to identify the helmet without having to touch it. As the magic flares, fifty-two severed heads appear in the void, and the eyes of the helmet blaze with light.

Elsewhere, the others gather to debate whether Flynn should possess the helmet at all. When Lotty and Cade hear its name, Vorath Myrr, both recall stories of the most infamous emperor of the Aeonian Dominion: a sadist and tyrant who delighted in cruelty. Lotty tells Flynn that, powerful or not, she can’t imagine why he would want anything to do with a relic of something so evil.

Berrick returns from the void visibly shaken and drags Lotty in after him, knowing she carries a scroll of Legend Lore. Horrified at the sight of 52 severed heads scattered about the void, Lotty reminds Berrick that you don’t have to be near an object to cast Legend Lore, you just have to speak its name. Why on earth did he bring her into this room of horrors?

As she casts the spell the white void fades to black; the faint outline of a crimson throne forms in the dark. The severed heads rise and orbit around them, their voices merging as one. They tell the tale of Vorath Myrr - a tyrant so obsessed with power he was willing to sacrifice his own blood to seize divinity. His children struck first, and as his head was severed his soul was drawn into the helm. It has whispered ever since, tempting those who crave power over peace.

When the vision fades and the heads fall silent, Berrick sets to the grim work of clearing the chamber. One by one, he carries each head to the sphere of annihilation. Lotty lingers, still stunned, before joining him. Together they form a macabre bucket brigade of two, passing bloody heads to be destroyed.

The decision is unanimous: no one should ever wear the helm. Berrick even considers asking Ezra about its destruction.

Meanwhile a ship has been sighted over the last week around the waters of Ezra’s island. Scouts keep getting pushed back by fog whenever they go to investigate, and the ships disappear faster than a normal ship would sail.

The gang get a quick lesson in crewing a ship from Captain Kraz and scout out to find the boat. Either flying or transformed into something small enough to hitch a ride, our heroes head to find the ship.

Null is flying fastest and is just about keeping pace with the ship, whilst the others are fast enough to keep the boat in eye line. Flynn tries to Dimension Door himself and Lotty, but there’s something warding the boat that keeps bouncing them back.

Act IV, Chapter Forty Eight "Break the stone, save the girl" (04-10-2025)

After being missing for some time Lotty eventually finds Null in the shower; she dismisses the waiting queue and goes to join Null in the water. Lotty tells a story of an old school friend, Poke, who suffered trauma in a cave-in and it still haunted him for a long time. Poke develops a three-step plan that boils down to focusing on something else, surrounding yourself with the people who love you and finding something symbolic to remind you you’re a survivor not a victim.

Cade, wondering why his patients are bathing in the sea, joins them in the shower and reminds Null there is a child of innocence inside her and subtly summons the rest of the Ashen Company. They all sit together in the water (except Flynn, who sensibly came dressed for the occasion and took a shower) and talk through some feels before Null asks for the group’s help.

Leading them to the Alistair statue Lotty gives Null a mason’s hammer and a steroid boost in the form of an enlarge spell, and Cade erupts the foundations of the statue whilst Null goes to town turning the statue to rubble, surrounded by the people who love her.

Dear reader, my time is short and there were a lot of feels this week, so some conversation highlights:

Null finds some cake to give to Latherial along with a confidence smooch on the lips, no less.

Cade finds his old friend Rhone and the stoic man of few words and the socially unaware Cade have as heartfelt a catch-up as could be achieved, and Cade asks Rhone if he can fashion him a leather belt that would adapt to his wild-shape so he could still have access to some of his equipment.

Null and Ezra have a catch-up. Null asks why he’s so protective of the helmet, and Ezra explains that it’s just too dangerous and even Flynn with his resistances wouldn’t be immune to its charms. When Null confesses to breaking the statue Ezra explains it hasn’t spoken for seven years since she killed Alistair. They share a drink and Null, sensing a feeling of doom in Ezra, tells him he owes his life to Vi and he has to live through this battle. Ezra gives Null a stone that she can use to cast mind blank on herself in a way that cannot be dispelled.

Our heroes find Grug holding arm-wrestling contests and gift him his bracers.

There’s a mini get-together as Captain Kraz, the old crew, Kel and new company mingle over food and music.

Act IV, Chapter 47: "Hail and hel-met" (2025/09/27)

The weird time soup that is our pre-siege tower hangouts continues. Narratively, we are all over the place.

With Cade in tow, Lotty asks Ezra if she can use his super-duper scrying device. When we last encountered this, Lotty had given up a couple decades of her life in order to confirm the location and status of Null's mother Evelyn. The wizard balks and wonders why she wants the costly option, when she has a perfectly good scrying orb in her possession. The last time Lotty checked, her old compatriot Geschut was being imprisoned and tortured by "Vi" in another dimension, so she thought she needed some extra juice. Ezra convinces her try the regular-strength scry first and it works out. Lotty fires it up and sees her old friend, the kobold Geschut, enchained and dangling from the ceiling of a frigid cell - Alive! She recognizes the location - it's Morrow Massani's old prison beneath the Last Stand Inn. Reader, I wasn't there so idk if that prison's on this plane or a different one [Reader, author two here - can confirm on this plane].

Lotty is beside herself - she had assumed Geschut was long dead. She wants to tell him that they're coming to rescue him. Ezra suggests Cade cast the Animal Messenger spell. Reader, I don't remember why Sending wasn't an option [Psst - Calitrax's wards]. There are concerns about whether a beast could survive the journey across the frozen wasteland to Sierrona and make it to the prison without being detected. What about a familiar? Cade's familiar Arthur is chosen for the trek, as Lotty feels that Null is too attached to Boobrie. But how to communicate with Geschut? Lotty scurries off to find Null, who she understands is fluent in Thieves Cant. Null is thrilled she finally gets to use this language/code/thing! At Lotty's request, she writes "Applejacks" in tiny font on a small, rolled up piece of paper - the perfect size to attach to the leg of a bird of prey. Lotty goes back to Cade and Ezra - they attach the message to Arthur and send him out into skies through a newly conjured window. Godspeed! Satisfied, Lotty sequesters herself to write down more resurrection secrets. Lotty discovers that there may we a way to work a revivify with a soul swap - knowing how eager her friends are to give up their lives for one another she doesn't advertise that discovery.

Later, Cade peruses the lich book that Berrik gave him. It reveals its secrets in exchange for some spare blood Cade found lying around (his exaltium juice doesn't do the trick), telling him that he needs minimum 23 souls in order achieve lichdom. Cade wanders off to ask Null how she eats/collects souls. She, a little too casually, explains that she just grabs them when people die near her, but that she can only hold 7 at a time and they're fragments, not complete souls. Cade doesn't think that will work and goes back to the drawing board. Null returns to her mother.

Flynn goes to find Null in the common room. Evelyn offers them both snacks and juice boxes before toddling off to tidy nearby. Slurping his apple juice, Flynn asks Null if she'll help him steal the helmet of Vorath Myrr. Null furtively glances at her mother and agrees. Though she knows Flynn will do this with or without her, in exchange for her help she asks that Flynn get Vorath Myrr to tell her how to quiet the recent Azher/Cali hauntings she's been afflicted with. The warlock readily agrees. Flynn tells Null that the heist will go down at a party to be held in two nights, and then he moves on to recruit Cade.

Flynn convinces Cade to help with the heist by telling him that Flynn intends to use the helmet's power for good. He's helping their chances in the siege by taking it on, while also protecting the public by keeping the helmet from falling into the wrong hands.

Null goes for a walk, looking for the enchanted statue of young Azher that Ezra keeps on one of the lower floors. She finds it, and tries to use a bit of bravado on it. It is unfazed. The statue begins to taunt the rogue, reminding her that she’s his legacy, he’s in her bones and blood, and that every time she does her weird soul stuff she is imposing his will unto the world. Null tries to deflect by comparing herself to what Calitrax is doing, but it doesn’t work and the statue goes in harder on how her weird soul stuff is actually the best and all by/for him. Eventually, Null cracks under the torment and grabs a nearby fire poker. She pummels the gleeful statue until the nose flies off, then tosses the iron poker and flees. She needs a distraction, so she decides to swing by Ezra’s office and scope out the helmet.

Null enters Ezra's office super suspiciously while the wizard scribbles away at something on the desk. She notices the display case is empty, save for a note that simply reads "No". Ezra, without looking up, comments that he had to move it for safe-keeping. Null pretends she has no idea what he's talking about and leaves to report to Flynn.

Null finds her warlock friend just as he's telling Silas about the party. She lets Flynn know that the helmet is gone - Ezra stashed it away. Flynn begins to brainstorm another plan. Reader, I don't remember what led to this [I got nothing], but Flynn tells Null during this conversation that she's destined to eat souls forever. Already fragile, Null freezes and takes her leave to go to the showers as Flynn resolves to involve Berrik in the heist scheme.

Null retreats to tower's communal showers to have a little breakdown, wracked with dread over the prospect of her being damned as a tool of the Marionettist for the rest of her days. She goes full Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, sitting fully clothed in the shower.

Berrik is cornered by Flynn, who tries to get him to spill the location of the helmet. Berrik very quickly understand that this is not a good idea. He asks Ezra what the deal with the helmet is and why Flynn shouldn't have it. Ezra confirms that it's bad news bears, but says that Berrik can decide to pass on the helmet to Flynn after all this is over if he chooses to. So weird that Ezra thinks he won't be around to have an opinion.

Berrik returns to Flynn and says it's no for now, but offers to do a Legend Lore about it if he can source the necessary components. Flynn clings to the hope that he might be reunited with the helmet, if only Berrik could see how powerful it was and how it might help their cause. Flynn scuttles off to find Lotty, thinking she might have the components.

Lotty does have the components, but she's in work mode and Flynn doesn't get round to asking when instead, Lotty asks if Flynn can help brainstorming how to source Craz a ship that will get them to Sierrona. An icebreaker? Or just a normal ship with some extra help?

Meanwhile Silas, who has been oddly quiet for the last little while and distracted in such a way that one might think he was off dealing with a facilities infrastructure emergency, suddenly peps up and goes to find Nikolai and Lilly. He spots his former wards quietly sitting together at a far table in the mess, and goes to greet them. Lilly is cordial, while Niko is shut down and surly. The boy's stein shatters as he grips it too tightly. Niko storms off without acknowledging Silas. As Lilly makes excuses for Niko's behaviour, Silas spots a poorly masked bruise on the side of Lilly's face. Silas asks what happened - Did Niko do this? Lilly continues with the excuses for Nik's behaviour and says yes, but that it's not his fault - he didn't mean it and he lost control. Reader, Yikes on Bikes.

Silas goes after Niko and find him in the same side office where Null and Lotty hid from Evelyn. The boy, well man now, is clearly in distress as he cuts his own chest. Silas looks on, upset, and steels himself for a difficult conversation with his wayward, abusive son.

Act IV, Chapter Forty Six "New Name, Old Love" (24/08/25)

Null sees her mum in the room and immediately locks herself away in a side chamber. Lotty follows and tells her to open the door, eventually convincing Null to let her inside.

Whilst they are both hiding, Silas and Cade work with old storage crates, shaping them into weapon boxes. They engrave each with the Aeonian symbols of hope and love.

Cade finds the work therapeutic, he find memories of his earlier time with the Ashen Company coming back to him and strengthening. Even further back he remembers working alongside other god-forged in the temple. The feeling is clear; a purpose to use what the world provides to help others.

Berrik takes time with his dried liver to seek divine guidance. He asks if he has the power needed to keep his friends safe in the coming battle. The answer is yes, the power is his, but a question returned to him is does he have the will?

Flynn asks Ezra if he knows who is in the tower. Ezra confirms that he and Berrik can both sense who is present at any time. Flynn presses, asking about Null’s family. Ezra keeps quiet until Flynn points to Evelyn and asks directly if she is Null’s mum. Flynn approaches her and introduces himself. Evelyn says he must know her daughter Ellie. Flynn asks if she has any other children and Evelyn explains that her other two have passed.

Hearing Flynn talk to Evelyn is enough to draw Null and Lotty out of their bickering. Nothing either of them can say will be worse than what Flynn might stumble into. Flynn pulls up chairs for them both then he and Lotty step back to leave mother and daughter to their reunion.

Evelyn cries when Null confirms she is her daughter. She weeps that she has not been able to keep her baby girl safe, that she feels like the worst mother in the world, two dead children and one who never knew safety. Null reassures her that it is not her fault. They hug, long and awkward at Evelyn’s request, and it becomes clear where Null’s trait for too-long hugs comes from.

Evelyn wants to know everything, wants to be part of her daughter’s life. Null gives her the short version, the torture-lite lore dump, and explains she is no longer Ellie but Null. Evelyn says she will love her in any shape, any name.

In the days that follow, Cade turns to Berrik for help. He falters before explaining, almost collapsing, and Berrik steadies him. Cade admits that his power source is failing and asks if Berrik can teach him to change shape permanently. Berrik has a scroll of true polymorph from Ezra's spell book and also a book on lichdom, though that path is far less palatable. In the end Berrik chooses learn the polymorph spell.

Act IV, Chapter Forty Five "This week tomorrow" (09-08-25)

Null sees a lady, Evelyn, in the sand looking for shells. She watches, hidden, before looking for flowers to pick.

Inside the tower, Berrick goes off with Ezra to destroy the phylactery. When the two of them poof out of existence, Flynn wonders if Ezra has betrayed them. He heads toward the helmet in Ezra’s office to discuss how to combat a betrayer Ezra, but thankfully Cade talks him out of a B&E for now.

Outside the tower, Null continues to nervously watch the lady on the beach. She knows this is her mother, but she’s too scared to make that first approach.

Berrick and Ezra arrive in a space of white nothingness. Ezra explains that this is not strictly speaking the tower, but an arcane construct that he can use to contain things safely. It also has other properties - Berrick thinks about a table, and one appears. Ezra conjures a vision of Sierrona to show his battle plans before gesturing to a door that reveals a familiar sphere: the Sphere of Annihilation. Berrick is only too happy to throw it in the phylactery.

Ezra asks what Berrick’s intentions are after this fight. Does he have any interest in learning more about magic? Berrick is impressed by what he sees and agrees that he’d like to learn more. Wordlessly, Ezra leans in, pressing his hand to Berrick’s forehead. Ezra then grants Berrick full access to the tower, bequeathing it to him if he doesn’t make it. The offer comes with a friendly warning: all of his previous students have died, but that’s just standard day-to-day risk for Berrick.

Back in Ezra's study, Flynn hears a voice telling him to break into the cabinet where the helmet is stored. With conflicting voices in his mind - Mordecai arguing against stealing the helmet, while the new voice urges treachery - Flynn wrestles with temptation.

This is Silas' first visit to the tower. Being unfamiliar, Silas decides to get the lay of the land and mingles with the crowd of survivors in the common area, where his battle prowess, legendary stories, and knack for music bring hope to the masses. There’s a mixture of fear, excitement, battle-readiness and doom-filled resolve.

Lotty is just as nervous about meeting Null’s mum as Null is. She nervously paces the entrance to the tower, waiting for Null to appear. She notices Rhone, Fallah, and Grug in the tower. She sees Evelyn busying herself with chores, but Lotty isn’t brave enough to approach, so she goes looking for Null instead.

Having found some flowers, Null attempts a daisy chain, but she’s not quite happy with it. Lotty told her she used to make these as a child, but the muscle memory isn’t there. She decides to go back inside the tower, she’s not quite ready to meet Evelyn yet. As she does, it starts to snow.

Null and Evelyn both try to get into the tower. The door isn’t where it should be. Looking around, Null doesn’t see anything unusual, but she smells decay and roses. Evelyn begins to panic as it gets colder, calling for Ezra, but neither of them can find the door.

Thinking quickly, Null downs a potion of flight and tells Evelyn to hold on tight. She grabs her mum and tries to fly up to the top of the tower, but nothing happens. Evelyn begins to suffer in the cold until Null takes off her warm clothes, wraps them around her mother, and encourages her to drink a potion of invulnerability. With her mum protected, Null activates her Ghostwalk ability to slip her head through the wall.

To her shock, she’s pulled out of the tower with force. By Evelyn? No, it's not Evelyn. It's Calitrax.

Despite the momentary shock, Null steels herself. Having a loved one betray you has always lingered in the back of her mind, and she’s quick to raise her swords. Calitrax has only one thing in mind: the utter destruction of Null. Null’s strikes seem to do no damage, while Calitrax hurls damaging disintegration rays. After trapping Null in a force cage, Calitrax defeats her.

As Lotty leaves the tower, she sees no sign of snow or Calitrax — only an unconscious Null lying on the beach. Lotty rushes to her, pours one of the last remaining revivify potions into Null’s mouth, and holds her tight whilst casting a healing aura. As Null explains what happened, she begins to wonder if Calitrax was really there at all. Lotty checks in with Boobrie, who confirms she saw nothing of the fight. Boobrie describes Null being on the beach one moment, and then simply collapsing. Though unsure of what just happened, Lotty finds it easy to believe her friend; psychological warfare is certainly within Calitrax’s realm.

Back in the tower, Silas is keeping court. A fan asks for an autograph, and Silas obliges with a fiery tattoo of an “S” on his forearm.

Cade asks Ezra about the helmet in his office. Ezra explains it’s an ancient artefact, very likely to cause trouble, but useful for occasional conversation.

Flynn later pulls Ezra aside to talk about Null. Ezra says he wishes only happiness for her, it’s what Vi would have wanted after all. Ezra notes that it’s always the strong friends you need to check in on: the people who never show weakness or vulnerability. Flynn asks Ezra if they’re friends, and when Ezra smiles, Flynn asks if he’s really doing okay. Ezra admits he isn’t, he’s losing the war, he’s lost the love of his life, and he's not for taking his own advice. He needs to suppress his feelings. Flynn reassures Ezra, in his own special way, that this week tomorrow it will all be over now the Ashen Company has returned.

Flynn again asks about the helmet. Ezra explains that it is called Vorath Maya, the remains of an Emperor from the Aeoin Dominion. He promises that if, after this war is over, there are no more clear threats, Flynn can have the helmet.

Meanwhile, the Ashen Company hears about Null’s exploits. They try to piece together what happened. Silas checks in with Reno, who confirms Boobrie’s story, and Ezra detects no magical shenanigans.

Sensing an opportunity, Flynn sneaks back into Ezra’s office. He polymorphs into a mind flayer and decides to have a one-on-one conversation with the helmet. Flynn offers to free the helmet if it will help defeat Calitrax. He is very clear that there must be no shenanigans, no harm to him or his allies, no double dealings, and no sneaky clauses.

As the Ashen Company reconciles what has happened to Null, and Flynn hatches yet another scheme, they feel a measure of safety within Ezra’s tower, waiting for more allies to arrive.

Act IV, Chapter Forty Four "Shared dreams, separate nightmares" (02-08-2025)

Never one to let an awkward corpse situation linger, Flynn calls out the dead litch and the Ashen Company gather to investigate.

Lotty casts see invisibility and immediately realises they are surrounded by ghosts. Assuming she was the only one able to hear them, she took charge of the conversation, only to find everyone else could hear the voices just fine. The ghosts explained they had been trapped inside the lich, Mikael, for an unknown length of time. When the Company destroyed the cannons and contained him, the spirits seized the opportunity to strike from within and finish him off, freeing themselves.

The ghosts intended to claim the keep but were open to a temporary alliance while our heroes took a knee and rested. They pointed to a drawer in Mikael’s desk that might contain something useful.

Cade examined the desk and spotted magical wards, which he and Flynn dispelled with ease. There was also a physical trap. Null worked to disarm it, but not with complete confidence. She and Flynn decided on a Mage Hand combo to open the drawer and retrieve the contents. The caution proved warranted as anti-magic bolts fired out as the drawer slid open. Thanks to their quick reactions, no one was hit.

Inside they found a tiara, a flesh-bound (and deeply unpleasant) book, and a sack of stones.

Cade identified the stones as twenty random exaltium stones, which were divided among the group.

Lotty examined the tiara and confirmed it to be Mikael’s phylactery.

Berrick inspected the book and discovered it was a 'Dummies Guide to Lichdom'.

The Company took a short rest in the tower. Silas used the time to place a warning sign on the island near the fort, marking it as claimed by ghosts. At the ghosts’ request, Null strung Mikael’s remains up on a warning pike. Lotty resummons her familiar, Boobrie, as a winter ermine emotional support weasel and slips her in to Null's pocket.

After the rest, the group began the long, well, mostly airborne, journey to Ezra’s tower. Cade wildshaped into a giant eagle and carried Berrick. Silas summoned Reno. Lotty took her flying carpet. Null and Flynn shared a flying disk Cade conjured.

During the flight, Flynn turned away to write a message to Innocence, a young girl he’d met in a dream the night before. He explained he hadn’t found her other half yet, that they had just liberated a ghost fort from a lich, and that he would keep looking. At the same time, Null experienced a strange new memory: hearing a message from Flynn. Confused, she wondered if he was somehow messing with her. This led to a tangled conversation involving Flynn, Silas, Cade, and Berrick about whether they might have had some kind of shared dream—though the details didn’t match and no conclusion was reached.

The landscape changed as they flew, the frozen ice ending abruptly as they crossed the border of Calitrax’s domain into warmer climates. They located the invisible tower and, after learning the secret word to reach the top, first searched for the sphere of annihilation to dispose of the phylactery. It wasn’t where it had been before.

Eager to be rid of the phylactery, Lotty ascended to the top of the tower first. Null hesitated, prompting Flynn to check in, acknowledging how difficult it must be for her to see Ezra again after so long—and her mother for the first time. As Flynn rejoined the others, who had ascended to the top of the tower,  Null walked around the island and was approached by a very familiar woman.

Act IV, Chapter Forty Three and a half "no note takers present" (26-07-2025)

Breaking news: Memory Loss or Mass Confusion? The Ashen Company Mystery Deepens

Good evening, viewers. We bring you a developing story tonight that continues to baffle experts, frustrate followers, and disappoint dungeon masters across the realm.

Imagine, if you will, a dark and gritty world where only two members of a heroic adventuring party can typically be relied upon to recount the tale. Now picture this: neither of them showed up. What unfolded next may never be known.

But tonight, we try, against all odds, to piece together what happened to the Ashen Company during this most chaotic and undocumented session.

What We Know (Which Isn’t Much)...

Based on scattered reports, faded memories, and at least one spilled tankard, we believe that Berrick, Cade, Flynn and Silas were present for something. The nature of that something is currently unclear.

Sources confirm that Lotty was absent — likely due to "unspecified artificer commitments" or possibly a nap. As for Null, well… we have some quotes that may offer a disturbing window into what transpired.

Our on-the-ground reporter was able to intercept several post-adventure statements. Please be warned: some viewers may find the following quotes disturbing:

"We, like, dreamt inside of Null’s, like, subconscious or something? And, like, found her ‘innocence’ or something."

"I dunno man"

"We think we have to find some random girl’s other half instead of Null being right there."

"We were inside a bull."

"Only Cade might know."

"It was gooey."

"There was a Null-coded kid who was, like, trapped or in a coma or something?"

We reached out to Cade’s representatives for comment on the "only Cade might know" claim. The only response was a 17 second sigh and a sketch of a goat in a wig.

What Comes Next? With no notes, no narrator, and no narrative thread to follow, all we have are vibes. Theories continue to swirl in taverns and Discord chats, ranging from “collective dreamscape therapy” to “a particularly aggressive cheese hallucination.”

Dungeon Master authorities have declined to issue an official recap, citing “emotional damage.”

Stay tuned for further updates as this story continues to unravel, or possibly knit itself back together in the next session. We’ll be here — taking no notes and asking all the wrong questions.

Act IV, Chapter Forty Three "storming the frost fort" (05/07/2025)

After winning the fight against their would-be ambushers the Ashen Company decide to sneak into the fort through the side with a small bridge that faces a forest.

With a plan in place for the majority of the group to go invisible and then stoneshape through a wall directly in to the room of the litch,  all but Lotty approach the fort. Unfortunately the Eldritch cannons care not for invisibility and start blasting the group around.

They stick to to plan as best they can, Berrick breaks through the wall and Cade unleashes a silence spell to stop the litch from getting word out.

It’s a tough fight at first, this Litch seems to be impervious to any damage dealt and starts to make an escape to the top of the tower. Null follows suit and fully launches herself in to the Litch to send them both back to the ground.
Lotty sends up Boobrie to sacrifice herself as literal cannon fodder and brings an Arcane hand to the mix to push the litch back in to the silence spell allowing Flynn to trap the litch in a forcecage within a silence spell.

Now they're trapped Null noticed the cannons are looking pretty rough and the company finally realise the damage dealt to the Litch was being taken by the cannons.

The Ashen Company beat up the cannons until they explode. No one else is seemingly present in the fort, so we begin to return to the lich to finish him off. Flynn notices something creepy - in the force cage, the lich has had its neck snapped.

Act IV, Chapter 42: "Intentions? PLANS? Ugh." (2025/06/28)

The Ashen Company give the new task their full attention. The fate of everyone in this hideout depends on the party getting this done quickly, quietly, and without any extra attention from Sally in Sierrona. But how? Strategic discussions ensue.

We know we're up against a smattering of eldritch cannons and an unknown number of enemy combatants, plus we anticipate at least one caster at the fort - someone who could use sending to call for reinforcements. We will need to end them quickly, or keep them occupied enough that they won't raise the alarm before we kill them. We run through a bunch of ideas, but find it hard to land on anything concrete. After some time we hit a wall and take a break.

Null has been thinking about their upcoming foray into what is sure to be another frozen wasteland. She focuses on Berrik's loose bun and asks to fix his hair. She brushes his long hair out and re-does it in a French Baneland braid - to better insulate his head and to give enemies less to grab onto in close combat. She offers everyone else at the table the same deal, but there are no takers - not even L. Silas sees his chance and takes it, sweeping his gleaming locks into a bun and becoming the Ashen Company's next top topknot-haver. He's been wanting to do this for awhile, but didn't want to step on Berrik's toes. Public self-care is the last straw for Latharial, who is clearly annoyed that we haven't left yet. It was bad enough that we took her quest at face-value AND deliberated it accordingly, but this is a bridge too far! She storms off without contributing any advice or additional intel that would help us get to the finish line of forming a plan. As we try to gather ourselves, we overhear Latharial offer the mission to another resistance agent. Jenkins carries himself with the self-assurance of someone who will definitely die in the prologue.

FINE. We've worn out our welcome, and so decide to just leave before L decides to send another underqualified resistance member to their death. We'll see what we find when we get there. We figure flying will get us there faster, ahead of the resistance convoy, and so we opt to do that. The vibes aren't right for any goodbyes except to Aunt Ella at the moment, so we find her and say we'll see her there. As the Ashen Company takes their leave, Null spots Latharial from afar - She's got freshly braided hair. The lady is fucking perplexing.

It takes a day for us to fly there, using hand-waved amounts of resources. We land about 500(?) feet away from the fort, behind a snowdrift tall enough to keep us from view. It's fuckin' cold as a lich's tit out here, so Cade gets to work casting Tiny Hut. Before too long we are warm and cozy inside - it's been awhile since the Ashen Company piled into a Tiny Hut together. Before we settle in for a long rest, Flynn conjures his Arcane Eye and sends it to scope out the old Aeonian fort. He relays all that he sees as he tours the perimeter walls, spotting a few elevated eldritch cannons (these seem vulnerable to magical manipulation or toppling). Several cultists are milling about the complex, on the walls and in the courtyard, but overall it's a pretty casual atmosphere - they don't expect to get attacked stationed all the way out here. Flynn next guides the Arcane eye inside. He passes through a barracks and follows a long corridor down the western side of the complex. He sees a robed figure writing at a desk by candlelight. Flynn can't not try to snoop on what this guy is writing down, and so prompts the Eye to approach. The closer the Eye gets, the more prevalent the figure's almost skeletal features become. As he attempts to peer over the figure's shoulder, the Eye is spotted and immediately dispelled. Oh dang, well that's not optimal. Back in the hut, our only option is to lie low and try for a rest. Attacking the fort now when the figure is on high alert is sure to go poorly.

Our long rest passes without apparent issue. Shortly before the hut ends Flynn casts Control Weather, opting to get rid of the frigid cold so that we don't have to make endless saves against exhaustion out here. Cade casts Telepathic Bond on everyone just before the hut disappears and then we tumble out into the snow. As we straighten ourselves out, Cade notices some odd-looking snow mounds around us. They are humanoid-sized! We've been made and Cade lets us know telepathically. Berrik quickly casts True-Seeing to find out what we're dealing with. The wizard tells his friends there are 8 invisible baddies. Silas activates his Divine Sense - sensing a bunch of undead except for one celestial (Reno?). Melee ensues. The cultists are aesthetically on point, doing both necrotic and cold damage. One of their attacks can impose the Stunned condition for an entire round on a failed save! If adventuring monks in Ios could learn how to do this instead of a Staggering Strike, I'm sure they would be thrilled.

We stop the session partway through the fight.

It's fine! We're gonna get through it! The fort at large probably still doesn't know the Ashen Company is here.

Act IV, Chapter Forty One "Who's been sitting in my chair" (21-06-2025)

As a hub of morning activity just starts to gather in the underground cell of Lady Latharial's hideout an elderly gnome sits, hidden as best she can in the corner of the room. Usually a stoic matriarchal figure, we see she's sat on the floor; knees up to her chest, weapons on the floor fully weeping as she stares in to in to a small locket…

Oh Da, I cannae believe this is happening. I've got so many letters I never got to send and so many stories to tell you, I feel like I've not seen enough of you over the past year or so and I didnae think I'd ever get the chance. I should just turn this thing around, I can hear Flynn over there spinning yarns on our adventures. He's got Silas accompanying him and making himself the hero of every story. Gods bless his wee heart, I'm sure Silas will correct him later.

So, did ya ken that Ella had this all along? Has she not used it? She tells me the wee clan is all ok, it's just us now - those that left the mountain but her & Garrick, the boys Alynn & Argil. Great Aunt Aileen & Uncle Alistar, the twins Taven & Thacker and his better half Umser, their Banla and wee Kendrick are all safe. Ella said this locket arrived a while back, had a note in it, said "Lotty, I'm not going to make it. I haven't always done right by you. I hope this helps" it had this locket in it and I'm guessing Remmi somehow took the other half with him and gave it to you. Pretty presumptuous of him to ken that he'd end up in the same place as you two after he died!

I donnae ken how it works there, I mean I thought I'd been transported back in to a wee babie or something - time travel on the brain an' all - but if you, like, see Remmi; tell him to rest. I'll never stop disliking the things he did to me and mine, I didnae like his methods but I know he wanted to do the right thing and he did, by the people of Sieronna. I'm gonna try and do the same for him, tell him we're even.

Ay up, I just saw Cade go wandering off after Latharial, I ken he's been worried about the strength of that last attack on those messengers. He's not wrong, that was a lot of heat on us - those poor guys wouldn't have stood a chance if we'd not turned up. I think Cade's itching to get in to Sieronna and work out what's going on there. Latharial is planning a briefing later so I'm sure she'll fill us in.

Hang on, now Flynn's sneaking off, Null's following too but even I noticed she went the wrong way, not very Null like…

As Flynn sneaks back to the room he casts telepathy with Human Flynn, he needs to do right by this poor deluded man. He explains to human Flynn that he is the small goblin that he wanted to adopt some eight years ago and asks Human Flynn to think back to their first encounter at the court house. Flynn points out that besides his size there was nothing child-like about the adult, cigar smoking, man that he met. Human Flynn is struggling to reconcile with the trust and really not appreciating the facts that Flynn is laying out. It seems Flynn's original deception was just too good to undo years later and Human Flynn sets out to purchase a ring of mind shielding to block out Flynn's words. Before he fully attunes to the ring Flynn convinces Human Flynn to give him a chance to explain in person and an ominous agree is made to meet again where there first met in Pacapa - sometime in the future...

Latharial lays out a map and gives a sitrep on Sierrona

  • Only the west and east sides of the city are open, the others are sealed with ice
  • The harbour is completely frozen over
  • White dragons patrol the city
  • Latharial has seven spies inside the city

Cade raises the sewer route they took the last time they had to infiltrate the city and assault the aptly named Last Stand Inn, which reminds Lotty of the fireballs under the city, which reminds Null that Sarni was a fiend and they didn't go kill him on his own plane, which reminds Berrick that Sarni had a specific price for betrayal which reminds Silas to suggest checking in to see if Sarni is still around, which reminds Flynn he still has a crystal ball so the Ashen company decide to check in on Sarni. To their disgust they see him in the kitchen of the Ashen Company's villa, feet up on the table enjoying breakfast with a hareem of cultists and slaves. Cade is concerned that Sarni hasn't been attending to his garden.

Latharial knows the current hideout isn't gong to stay safe forever and the one remaining safe place now is Ezra's tower, the plan is to gather the resistance cells there, they can all make it on foot with the seas frozen over but there is a lookout tower on the way. An old Aeonian fort built on an island that needs to be silenced lest word gets back to Sally of the gathering at Ezra's tower. The Ashen Company can likely travel faster so they need to race to the island and take out any cultists that could raise the alarm. We know there are two towers and the fort is several hundred feet in each direction fortified with eldritch cannons.

Time to do what the Ashen Company does best - make some bad plans...

Act IV, Chapter 40: "Are these notes... brief?" (2025/06/14)

Abso-fucking-lutely not! Buckle up, cause this shit is almost 2500 words. We yap too much.

________________

So the gang has taken to the skies and fled the remaining remorhaz's. We find the remaining resistance fighters close by - they lost their eagle forms when Cade lost concentration on Animal Shapes. These folks are suffering from multiple layers of exhaustion and need immediate intervention - the previous fight and blizzard conditions very nearly did them in. We all huddle up while Cade casts Tiny Hut. Lotty starts pumping out Cure Wounds. Once Cade is finished with the hut, he drops his owlbear form and we all trundle inside for a short rest. Berrik is sad to see his enormous dragon form go, silently vowing to find a scroll so he can learn the True Polymorph spell. Time to make a plan for the last leg of the journey back to the hideout.

Once the short rest finishes, we get moving. Flynn enters his unshackled form and casts Animal Shapes on everyone but Null and Lotty. The group will fly to the hideout as a parliament of snowy owls, while Null and Lotty follow in their usual forms (airborne, but invisible). The trip is an uneventful 30 minutes.

The group lands on a shadowy outcropping just outside the door they left through. They drop their illusions and animal forms as Null knocks on the door. Latharial, who immediately recalls the passphrase without issue, asks "Where do we roam?'

"Wherever the wind blows, baby" replies Null.

The door creaks open and the group stares down a dozen resistance fighters with crossbows at the ready. As before, everyone coming from outside must get stabbed with a syringe of anti-shapechanger compound. L tries to be chivalrous and whisks Null away from the unnecessary jab, while Null voluntarily drops back into her base form as a show of good faith. For everyone else, the jabs hurt, but they've been through worse. We're in.

As the wounded resistance fighters are shuffled off to recover from their ordeal, L invites the Ashen Company to follow her. After a few meandering minutes walking through the dark complex, they arrive in a chamber with a large map on a central table. Time for a debrief.

Latharial asks the group how it went. Well, we encountered 3 cultists who summoned three dragons and then turned into 3 ghosts, causing enough of a ruckus to draw the attention of 3 remorhazs. Dragons, huh? L's not sure why so many dragons would be involved. Null blurts out that the resistance fighters were ill-prepared for their task - they would have died without Ashen Company. L retorts that she has to go war with the army she has - the last 7 years have been hard but the resistance fighters she has are passionate enough about their cause to give them an edge sometimes. Null is in disbelief that her love would so easily send her people to their deaths. The resistance agents only had 1 sneak attack die, how could they have withstood 3 ancient dragons? L was not ready for this level of criticism - The Lady of Uud leaves the room, clearly upset.

Null isn't sure what to do - normally she would follow L and apologize, but this conflict feels a little deeper. The drama has heightened Lotty's impatience. She wants to see her family as soon as possible and so leaves to talk to the lady. Flynn, as usual, follows Lotty. Lotty finds L on a bench overlooking the pit, clearly distressed. As Lotty hops up to sit next to her, Latharial unloads about 7 years of stress.

"We are so close to losing it all every single day". For 7 years, L has been doing her best to keep the resistance above water under impossible circumstances. She alone has carried the load of keeping as many people alive as she can with increasingly limited personnel and resources. She knows that people have died and will die in service of the resistance and she struggles every day to convince herself that it's not her fault.

Lotty comforts her patron. She is compassionate, noting that the Ashen Company has no idea what L and the resistance have been through in the past 7 years. It's clear they've suffered immensely, but it's also equally clear that the resistance would have long since since lost the war if not for L's leadership. Lotty also notes that while the Ashen Company may not be caught up on what's happened on Ios, they have gone through other things themselves. At the end of it all, we are here to help each other, even if we may stumble as we get our bearings. Latharial seems calmer now, and hopefully comforted. She likens Lotty to Remmi, which takes Lotty by surprise. The only thing Lotty knows them to have in common is investment in the security of Sierrona.

Lotty asks the lady for two favours: An update on her family, and the boon of any spare pen and paper the resistance may have lying around. L relays that Ella will arrive tomorrow, and that Lotty is welcome to raid the stationary stores in a nearby closet. As Lotty directs Flynn to load up on paper, Latharial takes her leave.

Lotty and Flynn return to the rest of the Ashen Company, who are still hanging around the large table. Null, who has decided that she was too harsh, is gonna attempt to apologize to her girl. She requests that someone with a spare 9th level cast Greater Restoration on her - she's been feeling strangely weak and achey since the End of All Things and predicts she'll have to get on her knees to beg Latharial's forgiveness. Berrik acquiesces, on the condition that he never has to hear about why Null needs to kneel ever again. Fine with her! Null feels 23 years old again. Now that we're on the topic of restoring people to their former selves, the gang wonder if we should deal with our other afflictions? We've all been trying to ignore our gleaming Daylight teeth, but it would be nice to not have to deal with them should we need to keep a low profile in the coming battles. Cade offers Greater Restorations, but Lotty has a different idea. She tinkers with her tools until she makes a pair of specialized pliers - the gnome intends to rip out her own tooth and keep it as permanent light source. Hardcore! After the deed is done (one medicine check later - from Cade?), Lotty triumphantly pockets her ruined tooth and breaks out in a bloody grin. Her friends heal her up. The rest of the party's shiny teeth are dealt with in short order, but for some reason everyone else chooses Greater Restoration instead of back alley dental surgery.

A resistance agent enters the space, having been directed to show the Ashen Company to their room. We'd kind of been resigned to sleep here, but okay! We follow through the winding complex until we reach a large chamber. All things considered, these lodgings are generous - three whole beds, a pile of blankets and various amenities. Flynn, however, is too good for this and will instead spend the night in a place more befitting his station - the throne. As things seem to be winding down for the night, Null decides to go find Latharial. She doesn't want her to go to bed angry. Lotty tries to reassure a nervous Null, telling her to just give L that look she does and remember to brush her hair before she comes back. As Null trundles off, she is confused - what look?!?

Silas takes a few minutes to roam the halls, filling them with song. His lyrics weave an inspiring narrative of resilience and strength in the face of adversity - he hopes to boost the morale of the resistance. Unfortunately, he neglected to check the time before doing this so his performance gets mixed reviews from a bunch of sleepyheads. He eventually returns to AC Central and falls asleep in the pile of blankets.

Lotty and Cade have a bit of a heart to heart. Lotty asks her friend for goodberries in various colours, which he happily obliges. The towering warforged then reaches out to cast Regenerate on his friend, bringing back her missing tooth (plus some others she had lost along her travels). Cade then moves to the centre of the room and shuts down for the night. Lotty confides to Berrik her intentions for the night. He is too sleepy to join her, but helps her get set up before he too passes out in the pile of blankets. Lotty gets to work mashing up the goodberries into colour-coded inks. She will need these distinctions as she gets ready to pull an all-nighter transcribing the secrets of resurrection she learned from Eyeball.

_______________

Meanwhile, Null finds herself at what she thinks is L's door. She asks for privacy from the nearby guard, who mockingly obliges. A knock reveals that L is inside, so Null proceeds to begin a somewhat rambling apology through the door.

She's sincere, as she always is, but definitely not succinct. She apologizes for being thoughtless. She needs to remember that 7 years have passed. They are different people now, and it will take some work to get to know each other again. And not that a reason is a valid excuse, but Null has never known a Latharial without options, without an army at her back, without the resources necessary to avoid hard choices. Null was stupid to even consider doubting her efforts - L is the compassionate and thoughtful and brilliant. She's the best leader and patron Null could have ever asked for, and not just because she lets Null see her naked sometimes. Null hopes L can find a way to forgive her...

Suddenly, Latharial's door creaks open - Null must have leaned too hard on it. She peers inside and sees an exhausted Latharial passed out in a chair at her desk, various important papers scattered beneath her fiery hair. Null skulks in, not wanting to wake her. Not knowing what part L feel asleep at, Null writes down her apology in the form of a letter and leaves it on the desk near her face. Null then sneakily makes her love as comfortable as possible in her current position without waking her - a pillow beneath her head and behind the small of her back, a warm blanket wrapped around her shoulders, drool gently dabbed away from her slightly open mouth. With that, Null shuffles out the room and back to AC Central.

_______________

Lotty clocks Null coming in a little while later. The changeling is discouraged she couldn't communicate with L the way she wanted to, but still feels that apologizing was the right call. She bids goodnight to Lotty before passing out in one of the nearby beds.

Lotty spends hours transcribing the forbidden knowledge in her head, the penultimate gift from the cosmically wayward subject of The Police's 1983 hit "Every Breath You Take". After some time, she blearily blinks and sees the illusory form of Remmi sitting across from her. Lotty wonders "Why would I think of you?"

Remmi is here to comfort her, to remind her not to feel guilty for a moment. They chat and trade the usual barbs, but inevitably settle on a quiet goodbye and a wish for Sierrona's future. As Remmi disappears with her next exhausted blink, Lotty decides to finish up her work and get some rest. She packs up her notes and sits down at Cade's feet, leaning back against his sturdy legs. Sleep comes quickly.

________________

After some time, Cade's recovery cycle ends and he wakes, though silently and not moving so as to let Lotty rest. He notices that Null is sleeping restlessly, clearly struggling with some kind of nightmare. She has unconsciously taken the form of a handsome elf wizard he's never seen before. He is puzzled, but ultimately lets her ride it out. By the time everyone wakes around 7 am, she is back in her changeling form.

Cade goes over to ask about her dreams and the rest of the gang congregates. (Lotty notices a pool of oily sludge left behind where Cade spent the night). Null is initially reluctant to tell her friends about her nightmare where every necromantic thing she's ever done played like a creepy looping fancam that was narrated by Azher's praise, but she ultimately spills once Cade tells her about the handsome elf wizard. After reassuring Silas that he is, of course, more handsome than young Azher, Null tell her friends that she feel cursed to carry Azher's presence with her forever. The creepy powers she has came from him, but every time she uses them (even if it's to save a life) she feels pulled towards a familiar darkness. However if she doesn't use these powers, she risks letting down the cause and becoming a liability to her friends. She worries that she's haunted or possessed, despite Azher being long since dead. Silas casts Divine Sense and picks up nothing from Null. He assures his friend that she is only herself, but Null is still rattled and wonder if herself is just inherently evil. The rest of the Ashen Company and honestly any accredited therapists hiding nearby can see that Null's mind is burdened by trauma, but our girl simply doesn't have the capacity right now to cope with a problem that can't be dispelled or killed. Eventually the gang settles Null down and we all get ready to go for breakfast in the main hall.

Silas, Berrik, Flynn and Null go ahead, while Lotty and Cade stay behind to talk. The warforged druid comes clean to his closest friend in the world, showing her what's been afflicting him. He cracks open his chest plate, moving vines out of the way to give Lotty a clearer view. His core is barely intact and malfunctioning - his innards are suffering from a blight of sorts. The only thing keeping him together internally are the living plants inside of him. He reveals that his mysterious white vials, the ones he's been surreptitiously drinking, are actually refined liquid exaltium. This is what's been keeping him going. He makes it clear to Lotty that he's on borrowed time, hopefully enough time for him to help the rest of the Ashen Company finish the mission at hand. Lotty takes it all in for a moment, considering, before stubbornly telling Cade that they will actually find a way around this. He's not dying, because we won't let him. We'll figure it out.

Cade and Lotty eventually join the rest of the Ashen Company at a breakfast table in the main hall. Everyone in sight is sipping ale and eating porridge. We barely exchange greetings before an all-too-familiar face appears across the table - Aunt Ella is here, alive.

Act IV, Chapter Thirty Nine "fight night" (07-06-2025)

Adventurers and wanderers... welcome to fight night on Ios!

Live from the frozen abyss that blights the coast of Sierrona, where the snow bites harder than a banshee’s scream and the only rule is survive or die trying! I'm your host, Thunderlung Thaddeus, and oh baby, do we have a showdown for the ages tonight!

In this corner... the heroes of legend:

Berrick aka Drerrick, the man, the myth, the dragon — yes, folks, he is loving every second of it, breathing lightning and serving draconic domination with style.

Alongside him, the battlefield maestro Flynn, the eldritch puppeteer in the skies.

The healing heart with a mace, Lotty, never backing down, never letting up.

The divine fist of fury, Silas, bringing anime acrobatics to a holy beatdown.

The primal predator Cade, doing owlbear shit and taking no prisoners.

And the cold-blooded killer in killer gauntlets, Null, who has all the chill, especially when she's literally casting it.

But wait! What’s this? The three cultists who summoned the dragons—oh, hold on—they’re back from the dead! Not with robes and chants this time, but as ghosts of the frigid deep, colder than an ex’s text message.

The blizzard hits like a hammer from the gods—our heroes stagger under exhaustion, breath frosting mid-air. But wait! Lotty comes in clutch, dropping the cleanse on Null and keeping her in the fight.

Cade, bless his wild heart, channels the full fury of the owlbear spirit—but oh no! He’s possessed! A ghost tags in and takes the wheel, turning Cade into a Lotty-smashing weapon.

Lotty’s having none of it—until bam! She’s grappled, dragon-clawed, and carried off like a prize by the last draconic beast standing.

And out of nowhere—it’s Flynn with the Eldritch Blasts! Lightning flies, magic screams, and boom—the dragon is down! The crowd goes wild!

But the undead don’t stay dead for long, folks—just as the dragon falls—the earth erupts!

Three remorhazes rise, chittering nightmares in service of the Lich Queen herself. Ice, and fury embodied. The stakes? Cosmic.

Heroes scramble—Flynn takes flight, Lotty sprints to her carpet like it’s the last cab out of hell, Silas and Null hitch a ride on the glorious back of dragon-Drerrick. But Cade? Oh, Cade’s stuck in the pit— groundbound, and raging.

But Flynn’s not done yet. He’s in the air, raining Maddening Darkness and Synaptic Static like it’s a pyrotechnic finale at a doom-metal concert. Mind-melting magic that makes even the remorhazes hesitate.

Null’s stepping up, those gauntlets glowing ominously—she launches a Chill Touch / Inflict Wounds combo straight into a remorhaz’s soul. It crumbles in agony—and then...

Oh my god. Null whispers a curse, eyes gleaming—Blood Curse of the Fallen Puppet. The dead remorhaz jerks back to life like a marionette of pain and beats a ghost to death. Somewhere in her head, a voice whispers... “Good.”

Ladies and gentlemen, that’s what we call high necromancy with style.

Meanwhile, in the arena of insanity—Silas is parkouring like an anime protagonist. And what’s this? He slaps a Dispel Evil and Good into Cade’s possessed body... through the ass. That’s right, folks. It’s divine intervention with cheeky execution—and it works.

Cade blinks. He’s back. He’s free. And he is mad.

Now airborne, victorious, and full of righteous fury, our heroes soar to aid the fallen resistance —those poor souls knocked from their eagle forms during the chaos.

The frigid battlefield is silent. The evil? Routed—for now, but the legend of this night? Eternal.

And there you have it, folks—steel has clashed, spells have soared, and chaos reigned supreme upon the battlefield! But when the dust settled and the final echoes of arcane fury faded into the night, one name shone brighter than a paladin’s halo in a goblin den...

Silas!

Silas bent fate like a bard bends the truth. He handed out boons like candy at a halfling harvest festival, and just when it looked like our dear Cade was about to become a meat puppet for a soul-sucking spirit... BAM! Silas steps in, gives fate a firm talking-to, and yanks Cade’s soul back like he forgot it at the tavern.

He didn’t just win MVP tonight—he charmed it, convinced it, and probably gave it inspiration to boot. So here’s to Silas: scholar of fate, saver of friends, and undisputed master of dramatic timing!”

Truly, the MVP of tonight’s legendary clash. The chronicle of this battle will echo in taverns for generations, and at the heart of it all will be one phrase: ‘Silas saw the strands of fate—and pulled the right one.’”

Until next time, fight fans—this has been fight night on Ios.

Stay loud. Stay wild. And always bring backup when the ghosts start talking back.

Act IV, Chapter Thirty Eight "Side Quest: Rescue Mission" (31-05-2025)

Sensing a bit of hostility and tension in the room Null tries to spark up conversation with the guards but gets brushed off with a cold shoulder. Flynn tries with another guard and gets a similar response. Flynn uses an Arcane eye to get a sneak peek at a notebook the guard has been writing in and sees he has been tasked with keeping track of the Ashen Company's movements.

They do establish this place is big and that there's a daily get together and debrief each evening, as Flynn hatches a plan for a big speech Latharial returns to ask for help.

A recon team of 13 has been attacked on their return to base, they can't come any closer lest they give away the location so we need to get to them - Latharial also notes it wouldn't do their reputation any harm. The Ashen Company head out to meet up with Jennik the leader of the group and the agreed countersign "where do we roam?" "wherever the wind blows" firmly in their minds.

An hour up the coast they find just four survivors surrounded by cultists; short work is made of them but most of them sacrifice themselves to call forth a deadly blizzard and three ancient white dragons.

Well shit, lets get to fighting. Cade thinks on his owlbear claws and transforms the survivors in to giant eagles, giving them the health and speed they need to flee the immediate danger whilst the group lay in to the dragons, thankfully they aren't quite as legendary as Nassandrial but there's still three of them, Evening the odds Berrick transforms in to a blue dragon and lightning blasts two of them whilst Flynn paralysis another and Flynn finishes two of them.

Two down, one to go...

Act IV, Chapter 37: "15 Minutes & 25 Words or Less" (2025/05/24)

The Ashen Company continue their debrief with Latharial, peppering her with questions while we pick at the muddy stew in front of us.

We learn that Remmi didn't make it - after a year under the Sequester spell, he saw no hope for recovery. Taking his fate into his own hands, he walked into Ezra's Sphere of Annihilation. Lotty asks about Layla, his paramour, and learns that she has been out of communication for some time.

Null asks about Zanidonia. Latharial says that she left Zubbe in charge years ago when things popped off. To her knowledge this is still the case, as he sends updates from time to time. The wyrms have left the region wholly untouched. The lady takes out a map and lays it across the table to illustrate the state of the continent.

Blue is the territory of Calitrax. Red is Kovish. Green is Erithax. Unclaimed areas like the big of chunk of Crimson Fields is where all three go hunting for slaves - not a peaceful place. Zanidonia is chill. Lands of Desolation are too desolate for everyone. The Southern seas have frozen over, killing most marine life.

Latharial asks the Ashen Company to make a list of potential allies they could call upon for a final assault on Calitrax. She confirms that Zubbe and Rhone would be available, but they will need more help in order to have any chance at success, We start brainstorming and writing down options, while Berrik, Flynn and Lotty pull several Sending scrolls out of their pockets. As the Ashen Company get to work, Latharial takes her leave. She has things to do and will be back later.  Null is anxious to clear the air with the Lady, but isn't sure whether L wants to be followed right now. She's a busy lady running a rebellion! Lotty and the gang give the changeling a withering look, while Null insists Latharial is impossibly inscrutable. After a couple of minutes they convince the rogue to go after her.

Null finds Latharial going between rooms in a busy corridor. She asks if they could talk, later is fine too if she's busy. L stops and brusquely gestures Null into a nearby storage closet - She has 15 minutes before her next meeting. Null wasn't expecting these constraints, but beggars can't be choosers if this is a chance at winning her girl back. The rogue begins a contrite and somewhat rambling explanation of what happened from her perspective. She apologizes for not being there, knowing the past 7 years have been painful. She wishes she could take on what L went through. Null understands that what happened may mean irreparable damage to their relationship, and if that's what the situation is she will accept it. But would she let Null hold her again, if only for a few seconds?

Latharial takes it in for a moment, before she starts to take off pieces of her armour. She emphatically tells Null that she has 15 minutes to make up for 7 years. In any other context  Null may have tried to ask why L continuously chooses to swerve emotional dialogue in favour of, uh, physical communication methods. But today is not that day! Understanding the assignment, Null quickly slides off her own armour as a courtesy  then rushes up to the Lady, kissing her everywhere. Null puts everything she has into those 15 minutes, hoping to make up for lost time. and remind L of what they had before the wyrms arrived.

The assignment.

Meanwhile, back in the tavern area, the rest of the Ashen Company gets to work contacting the entities on the list. Knowing his two former wards are traveling together, Silas contacts Lily first to ask for their help in the coming assault (he doesn't want to agitate Niko, preferring to wait until they can speak face-to-face). His instincts are rewarded as Lily commits the two to the cause, but adds that Niko is not doing okay.

Silas is troubled as he thinks of who to contact next. He decides to send a message to Luthor Strand, Commander of the Wardens of Balance and the one who administered his paladin oath all that time ago in Alya. This is the type of man he aspired to be, once - A sharp military intellect, a fierce protector, and a warrior who made the world a better place for those he cared about. Luthor Strand is a little surprised to hear from Silas after all this time, but altogether agrees to join the fight.

A little tired, Silas takes a break from making calls and heads to the bar. Speaking to Luthor triggered a hidden trove of military knowledge in him, a half-forgotten gift from the Eye. His now keen mind swimming with tactical wisdom of battles long past, perhaps he is closer than he thought to emulating that type of man. He thinks that's pretty cool and pulls out his flute to entertain everyone with FFX's Hymn of the Fayth. Mordecai summons a small choir to accompany him. A disheveled Null sheepishly returns, followed by Latharial a few minutes later. L brings the gang a few more Sending scrolls.

Okay, new format! Here is a list of the rest of the people we contacted:

NOT AVAILABLE

Ancient One: No reply from the timeless protector beneath Sierrona. Maybe Sally got to it.

Ashen Rider: No reply from our frenemy revenant. Likely died when Azher died?

Human Flynn: Scrying revealed that  Human Flynn is currently living in a rural cabin with a painted green halfling that wears large fake pointy ears. He calls this halfling "Junior". Has he finally gone off the deep end or this halfling manipulating Flynn's erstwhile daddy?

AVAILABLE

Ezra: The troubled wizard is begrudgingly on board, but who knows what state he's in.

Kel'zad: Kel is happy to help, albeit nervous-sounding.

Fallah: The broker of secrets is looking for work and awaits more details.

Craz and Booty Taker Crew: Lotty contacts her situationship Carr, who confirms that they're happy to help but that they will need a new ship.

Grug: After checking that Null is okay with pulling away her mother's protector, Lotty calls Grug to ask him to join the fight. Grug is in, and proudly notes that Evelyn has been training as a shieldmaiden over the past few years.

The Kraken: Berrik risks it all to try to get their last earthly enemy (and Cade's killer) onside. He cites the barren seas and their common enemy. He feels good about the interaction but has no way to confirm the Kraken's support. (OOC he met the DC of 30, but the Kraken has no way to reply).

Plus the Kraken, but we don't know that.

Okay now our characters have all moved to the bar, but we as players are asked to sort our available allies according to their strongest stats. These allies will be asked to roll checks with these stats throughout the coming battle. The rules and stuff are in the Conclave chat.

Kraken is good at everything, but Dex IIRC
Okay bye!
