Act Three, Chapter 6: "Not Today." (2022/05/21)

Despite the dire straits, Null manages to deposit an unconscious Kel safely within range of Cade’s unicorn spirit and revive him with a goodberry. On Kel’s turn he casts Storm Sphere, wounding several enemies. Silas manages to shrug off his crown of madness after only hitting Cade once. Remembering his experiences in elemental puzzle-solving, Cade attempts to throw alchemist’s frost on the red layer of the dome (which will do cold damage every round). On a whim, Null decides to try dropping an enemy onto the prismatic dome – it’s immediately clear that this baddie was not designated entry as he vaporizes 2 layers in. She wonders if this will work the same for other enemies?

Cade is pushed by a cultist warrior into the prismatic dome and falls unconscious, which causes Silas to return to his usual elf form as he precariously tries to keep his balance on the ledge of the jetty. Berrik is then grappled by a cultist warrior. He tries to resist with a Shocking Grasp, but soon finds himself forced over the ledge of the jetty and into the lava below. He takes a shit ton of damage as he is immolated but survives the fiery impact! Leaping into action, a hasted Lotty calls upon her hidden lassoing talents and manages to pull Berrik of the lava and back onto the platform– saving him from certain death. Kel rushes forward and revives Cade.

Silas “surpasses his mortal limits” to successfully propel himself over the ledge to safety. An enemy priest hits some of the party with a Fear spell – things are getting dicey. Null “walks off” a fear effect and gives vertical cultist bowling another try – this one makes it through all the layers of the prismatic dome and dies on impact with the head necromancer (who unfortunately succeeds on their concentration check). One of the priests soon retaliates by dispelling Null’s flight. Berrik is knocked unconscious. Null, now grounded, rushes forward and revives Berrik with another goodberry, pulling him back towards the party. Silas cleans house, leaving a trail of corpses in his wake. Seeing that the red layer is almost depleted Null decides to ready an attack on the head necromancer for the moment the red layer comes down, hiding behind the big rock and hoping for success against this buckwild magic shit.

Cade’s alchemist’s frost finally breaks through the red layer with (presumably) just seconds left in the necromancer’s ritual. Null unleashes her attack, doing significant damage with sneak attack but not breaking the necromancer’s concentration. Cade, thinking again about elemental problem solving, uses Gust to dissolve the second orange wall. Lotty whips out her crossbow to join the barrage - shooting the head necromancer and managing to break their concentration! The ritual is stalled. Silas approaches and tries to throw a dagger at the necromancer, but to little avail. Null drops a dagger for Silas and shoots the necromancer again, bringing them down but activating their Death Ward. With nothing left to lose, the necromancer leaves the prismatic fortress and casts Circle of Death before returning to the dome. Berrik and Silas are knocked unconscious, but everyone else is still standing. Cade attempts to Thorn Whip the necromancer, but the spell doesn’t pass through the layers of the dome. He does, however, revive Silas with a Healing Word and drops another dagger for him to use on his turn. He won’t get the chance to do so, however, because Lotty then shoots the necromancer through the throat and ends their whole little morbid career. The party looks up in time to see the summoning portal close, trapping an angelic being on the other side. The creature was the same one they had a seen a statue of earlier in the complex: an angelic, feminine figure in gold and black armour wielding a scythe.

The party recuperates and does some investigating. Lotty brings up Berrik. Silas takes the necromancer’s head. Cade determines that the giant rock looming over them is magical (a dimensional seal that blocks conjuration magic within a 2 mile radius) and that the necromancer’s robes are magical (Robes of the Reaper – very slick and powerful, perfect for Berrik). Kel reads the necromancer’s book and learns that they were attempting to resurrect a champion of Daes. Null picks up her and Cade’s daggers. Lotty understandably hates this place and wants to destroy it before the party leaves. She picks the wrong structural brick to mess with, however, and collapses the whole jetty with everyone on it. Most race to safety but Cade and Lotty barely make it to the threshold alive and Cade goes unconscious. Lotty immediately revives him and the party retreats back to the collapsed part of the tunnels. After some hemming and hawing, the Ashen Company decides to long rest there within Berrik’s (Leomund’s) Tiny Hut. Remembering all the skellies they left behind, Lotty sends a message to Remmi to warn him about the situation they found in Beinya in case they don’t make it back. However, once Cade starts clearing the rubble it becomes clear that the skellies are no longer animated. We also find some gold on our way out!

The Ashen Company returns to Sierrona exhausted and traumatized, despite their victory. This was too close. They turn in the quest to the Reapers and hunker down for a week of downtime to clear their heads, decompress and prepare themselves for whatever comes next.

Act Three, Chapter five "Must be Thursday" (14-05-2022)

As the dust clears from the fallen wall that pins Berrik, Lotty & Nessie to the floor the Ashen Company see a horde of skeletons pouring through the walls towards them. As Berrick and Lotty are freed from the rubble they join the fight, swatting away the undead whilst Cade manages to erect a wall of stone to replace the fallen wall.

As the group tries to make their escape they do not notice the two giant, looming skeletons blocking either end of the corridor. They do what they do best; group up, rely on each other and fight hard in order to save Kel. Whilst they make short work of the skeletons the Ashen Company are soon overwhelmed by their numbers and fading fast.

As a last ditch attempt at survival Berrik attempts to Planeshift the group, not knowing where in the Abysssal plane it might take them -though it may be better than the certain death they were now facing. Struggling with the thought of leaving Kel they group together and Berrik reads the scroll; maybe it was fate, maybe the desire to save Kel was too strong for the magic to take hold but, for whatever the reason, the group remained in place.

Thinking quick, Cade managed to revive the groups health using the purple exaltium stone to boost a healing spell and restore the group. Rejuvenated the Ashen Company manage to stave off the last few skeletons, Silas finishes off one giant armoured skeleton and with Berrik's help collapses the roof of the tunnel on the other.

Taking a moment to rest up and bandage some wounds Lotty summons her familiar, Boobrie, (having never been able to recover Nessie from the rubble) only to discover she does not appear. After a few tests the group realise conjuration magic has been blocked from working in this area.

Null scouts ahead and sees a room, filled with lava; a huge stone jetty reaches out over the lava - either side are cages. The cages have some of Beinya's farmers and Kel in them. As Null watches she see cultists chanting and throwing themselves in the lava. Each time they do, the cages drop closer to the lava as well - it seems some kind of ritual is taking place.

With few ideas Lotty gives Null a flying potion and she tries to reach Kel's cage hoping the cultists are too busy to notice. Cade follows Silas in bat form as Silas dons the cultist robe and attempts to reach the person at the front who appears to responsible for the ritual taking place. Berrik and Lotty stay back, keeping a watchful eye over their loved ones ready to spring in to action.

It isn't long before they spring into action: Null just manages to release Kel from his cage before it hits the lava as Silas reaches the head priest, who seems to be protected by some kind of dome. As Silas attempts to move in on the priest he is hit by wave after wave of different coloured flashes, each dealing a powerful blow of differing damage types. Knowing he followed Silas for a reason Cade turns him in to a giant gorilla, giving him a stay of strength and health. Berrik and a hasted Lotty rush to join their friends and see that one of the priests seems to have influenced Silas in some way as he turns an angry gaze towards Cade.

After enduring so much to rescue their friend from what started as a simple Reaper's guild quest the Ashen Company are once again facing a traumatic situation: Gorilla-Silas is staring down Cade, Lotty is facing down a priest, Berrik is toe to toe with several cultists and Null is carrying an unconscious Kel in her arms precariously trying to get him to safety.

Things may not be looking great for the heroes of the Ashen Company but they are together and the found family will not give up until the last.

TL;DR:

  • Pinned under rock
  • Fight skellies
  • Wall of stone
  • Giant skellies
  • Plane shift fail
  • Purple stone mass cure wounds
  • Null scouts and sees Kel
  • Rush in, Kel free & uncon.
  • Silas is a gorilla
  • Impending doom

Act 3, Chapter 4 - " How to Lose a Guy in Ten: Daes" (2022/05/07)

After pissing off the members of this pro-Daes cult, a disguised Null quickly returns to her friends. She warns them of the cult members giving chase, but she is overhead as they approach and her cover is blown. The cultists retreat and the Ashen Company is back at square one. They decide to carefully advance, following the sounds of voices speaking a language they can't understand. Null grabs the ledger she saw the priest writing in earlier. Cade summons a draconic spirit. As the party advances into the complex, a close-quarters fight with several warriors and a spellcasting priest ensues.

Kel casts Haste on Lotty on his turn, and quickly retreats to stay out of the melee. He does not reappear. The fight itself is difficult and drawn out. Warriors try to separate the party from each other and the priest controls the battlefield with spells like Evard's Black Tentacles and Hunger of Hadar. The priest also manages to get Silas to grovel for an entire turn, which thankfully Null and Berrik don't witness. So embarrassing. As the fight continues, Cade tries to check on Kel on each of his turns , but to no avail. He is gone. Eventually the Ashen Company prevails and all their enemies lie dead in front of them (permanently, I hope). They loot the priest's body. Null takes the fancy robe, just in case.

The party anxiously searches for Kel. Eventually they find a small hidden chamber behind some barrels in the foyer of the complex. They locate a tablet with a strange runic inscription and struggle to figure out what it's for. On a whim Silas throws a corpse on it, which promptly disappears. Cade sends an owl through the portal to scout ahead and determines that an empty tavern lies beyond. Forgoing a much-needed short rest in order to pursue their friend, the party follows the owl through. They find themselves in an empty tavern on the other side of the complex. A large, red arcane sigil covers the floor in the centre of the room. The party spreads out to search the area. Null takes some papers from a table that are in a language she doesn't understand. Cade locates a button behind the bar and pushes it. Suddenly, all ambient light in the area goes dim as the sigil illuminates. Cade flies his owl over it and it disappears. Another portal - much creepier than the last! The group decides they can't afford to risk Kel's life by resting, so they jump through.

The Ashen Company finds themselves in a larger chamber that appears similar to a run-down temple. A large statue can be seen in the central area. It depicts an angelic, feminine figure in ornate gold armour with black trim. She wields a large scythe. This is definitely religious iconography, but no one can place her. Berrik spots a set of doors that are ajar just beyond the top of a set of stairs. He ascends towards them, but accidentally triggers a trap. He is afflicted with a wave of necromantic energy from the Blight spell. Shrugging off his wounds he continues to the top of the stairs and beckons the party towards the doors, warning them of the possibility of traps. Null scales the railing to avoid the steps while others takes turns hopping aboard the Draconic Spirit Express, which ferries them safely across the flight of stairs, On the second level, the party finds a couple of morbid processing rooms: one filled with instruments (and evidence) of torture, and one filled with coffins and bones and more creepy shit.

The party approaches the set of doors that Berrik had flagged: two large, intimidating statues flank it. Cade decides to send the draconic spirit through first. As the spirit passes between the two statues they both attack, swinging out with their scythes and doing immense amounts of damage to the draconic spirit. Now knowing not to pass between the statues, Null moves behind them and look through the doors. She sees a hallway that seems to go on for hundreds of feet, with no end to be seen. The party follows suit, being careful to only move behind the statues as they approach the doors. Cade then sends the severely wounded draconic spirit down the hallway. At around 75 ft. it triggers a trap, a barrage of bolts coming out of the wall. This ends the spirit, but now the party knows to avoid this kind of trap by crawling beneath it. The Ashen Company advances down the hallway, with Null taking the lead and the rest of the group following behind. Everyone stays about ten feet apart from each other.

After a little while of travelling, Null and Cade notice a length of wall to their left begin to collapse. They are not able to warn their friends of this in time, as everyone tries to avoid getting crushed beneath the rubble. Cade, Null and Silas manage to dodge in time, but unfortunately Berrik, Lotty and Nessie are pinned by pieces of the collapsed wall. The Ashen Company is immediately shocked to find that the wall did not collapse due to engineering faults or tectonic anomalies. It collapsed as a troop of warrior skellies busted through it like the Kool-Aid man. With half the party trapped under rubble, dawning horror washes over them as they realize that this is an ambush!

Act 3, Chapter 3 "The Decent to the cultists..."

We return to the Allen family farm (same farm where Vai captured Geshut?), covered in a mysterious fog, where the Ashen Company had just vanquished several undead and captured a necromancer alive, but unconscious.  The necromancer was tied up and searched.

Kel had found a spell book, but when he opened it it exploded with a circle of death spell much like the Sword did from Delosius' family friend.  In the margins of the spell book was notes of how to cast effectively and a letter was used as a book mark that read "Harvest the crop in Beinya, he is hungry!"

Null searched the necromancer's body for both a tattoo on the back of her neck as well as for the fireball bead that agents of the Marionetist have.  Fortunately neither were there, however it was discovered that this necromancer had a tattoo on her chest that reminded Cade of what Elric told him of the Cult of Daes.

Cade wakes up the necromancer with a healing spell.  Outside of the name Syll, the group got nothing from her playing the classic good cop/good cop interrogation technique.  She did proclaim that she is the "Pinnacle of all creation"

Syll managed to mistystep out of her bonds and started running.  The group gave chase and Cade summoned a wolf to chase her down and knock her prone; unfortunately the wolf killed her in the process.  Silas went to the body and decapitated her head to take back to the Reapers Guild, when a spirit flew out of the necromancer's body and screamed "I will play with you all you want, but you will never get down below" then started casting spells at the Ashen Company.  Syll's spirit managed to summon some more undead but the party prevailed and vanquished them.

To investigate what Syll meant previously by "...down below" the Ashen Company went into the farm house and searched for anything suspicious.  Kel found a hold in the floor and lead downward into an underground tunnel.  At the end of the tunnel was a large skull with emerald eyes over a doorway with a series of jagged teeth blocking any passage way through the doorway.  The skull reminded the group of the iconography of the Fallen God Daes The Deceiver.  Null decided to try and prick her finger on one of the jagged teeth; when the blood touched the tooth they all pulled away and the passage opened.

As the party moved into the vestibule past the door, they heard voices talking about not expecting anyone to return yet.  A single cultist guard came to investigate.  Thinking quickly, Null grappled him and pulled him back where he was quickly dispatched.

To try and lure the rest of the guards, Null transformed herself to look like the guard and put on his cloak.  Then started asking the other guards for help with this "strange bird" that came inside.  The bird was a summons of Cade's that he created during the fight with the spirit of Syll.  Unfortunately, the guard Null was impersonating, Naris, was not well liked or respected by the other cultists so they didn't help and the groups ambush was foiled.

The Ashen Company debated what to do but finally decided to let Null follow the guards to scout then will report back to the party.

Null entered a red stone room that was more elegant.  There were several guards there with a more well dressed cultist behind a desk.  They taunted Null a little bit and told Null she was off duty.  There were two doors in front of Null, each had a guard, and no indication of which door to enter.  Null took a quick glance at the book in front of the more well dressed cultist and noted it was a log.  They taunted Null a little more when Null just yelled out "Fuck you!  I quick" and turned to leave back down the hallway toward the rest of the party.  The well dressed cultist said "Quit?" then turned to the other guards in the room and said "go fucking kill him!"
