Act Three, Chapter 9: "*slaps roof of orphanage* This bad boy can fit so many unspeakable horrors in it." (2022-06-18)

TLDR:

The Ashen Company waits a few more minutes in the foyer of the orphanage before an old, grey-haired woman in purple robes wanders in: This is Madam Trolley. She dismisses the guards so that they can speak privately. With Trolley’s permission, Berrik casts True Seeing for everyone’s peace of mind – nothing unexpected. Null (as Cyai) begins to try to present their case and the party soon realizes that Madam Trolley is as curt as she is ancient. This won’t be easy. Lotty tries to swoop in to give some room for Null to gather herself. Null tries a different approach, abandoning any secrecy by dropping her form and laying everything out on the table about her past and their questions. Trolley continues to be evasive. We learn the following, however:

Null notices that Trolley showed a hint of recognition to Null’s changeling form.

Lotty asks about the portrait of Vi on the wall and Trolley responds that her name was Esmerelda. She was adopted out to a loving home but eventually ran away from her family.

      - Trolley acknowledges the incident that Fallah mentioned to the party but insists that the child was removed from neglectful parents. She tries very hard to deflect out of this topic.

Trolley eventually offers to go search the orphanage records for the information the Ashen Company seeks, resisting any suggestions that someone accompany her. Still highly suspicious, the party have no choice but to agree to wait downstairs. As she leaves, however, Cade Wildshapes into a spider and follows her upstairs to an office. In the office, Cade watches her pour herself a drink, retrieve the requested records and then proceed to forge new altered ones on older-looking paper. After she finishes, she locks the original records in her desk and places the key around her neck. After nearly catching Spider!Cade, she feels secure enough to pull out a sending stone and speak “We may have a problem.” into it.

CUT TO DOWNSTAIRS

The party is restless as the minutes tick by with no work from Cade. Lotty gradually informs everyone of the significance of Esmerelda’s portrait. Null tries to sneak down the hallway to get closer but is interrupted by a guard that emerges from one of the doors. She asks to use the bathroom and he leads her to a privy down the hall, waiting for her outside despite her protests saying that she would be awhile. Silas steps in to try to play interference, attempting to lure the guard away with questions about weapon maintenance and swordplay. He lays it on a little thick, however, and the guard becomes suspicious. Null overhears and knows her time is short. Before leaving, she carves a message at child height inside the privy, advertising a 10 gp reward for delivery of Trolley’s record book to Fallah at the BoS. Going outside to wash her hands, she tries to look at where Cade might be on the second floor but all the second floor curtains are pulled closed. Inside, the party continues their wait and tries to pass the time with awkward small talk to the guards.

CUT TO UPSTAIRS

Trolley pulls out a brass, coaster-shaped device and takes an arcane holo-call as Spider!Cade watches. A 2 foot tall hologram emits from the device, showing an Aeonian elf man dressed richly in flowing robes. He says “This had better be important”.

Trolley refers to him as “My lord” and explains that the Ashen Company is there inquiring about special children. They suspect something and have made certain connections. Trolley has drawn up phony documents but admits that she doesn’t think they will satisfy the party. The man proceeds to instruct Trolley to “Purge the facility, remove viable assets, and start over elsewhere”. The arcane holo-call ends and Trolley gathers her false records. As she goes to return downstairs, Cade hops out of Wildshape and summons a boa constrictor guardian spirit, who proceeds to grapple Trolley. He shouts to the Ashen Company to secure the guards and protect the kids. Everyone rolls initiative!

Downstairs, the party leaps into action to non-lethally attack and try to get past the guards. Upstairs, a grappled Trolley Dimension Doors out of the snake’s grapple and out of sight. Frustrated, Cade instructs the snake to break the desk open. It does so and Cade manages to grab the original records and the brass device before he and the snake begin to head downstairs.

The rest of the Ashen Company continue the brawl downstairs. Null spots Trolley emerging from a new hole in the wall of the hallway, pulling two children behind her. As she disappears at the end of the hallway, Null shouts that Trolley’s escaping down the hall with kids. Berrik Dimension Doors to the end of the hallway and sees Trolley attempting to escape down a secret staircase beneath one of the privies. Lotty hastes Null and bids her to pursue, which she does. As Berrik and Null confront Trolley, she attempts to Banish them before fleeing down the toilet stairs. Null brushes it off but Berrik pops out of the Material Plane. Silas arrives and cuts down pursuing guards with ruthless efficiency, while Flynn and Lotty make quick work of the ones remaining. Everyone soon converges on the toilet stairs, with Cade entering first. Hasted Null and her boots of speed quickly rush ahead of the party. Silas activates his “Surpass Mortal Limits” and follows not too far behind Null. The Ashen Company descends into the perils of the lower levels.

Null races past a locker room and into a strange Fallout-style lab area with large glass walls that look into a cavernous chamber. Null sees several large vats in a ring around the room, each containing a nude humanoid figure suspended in goo. She also sees Trolley fleeing towards the far side of the chamber, kids in tow. Null unlocks the door to the vat chamber and moves to grapple Trolley, hoping her friends aren’t too far behind. She drags Trolley away from the two kids and tries to reassure them as she moves Trolley back towards the lab doors. The rest of the Ashen Company (except Berrik, who is still off living his best life in a harmless demi-plane) continue their approach.

Trolley Misty Steps out of Null’s grasp and back to where she was heading. She collects the kids and pulls a lever near a door on the far side of the room, then leaving through the door and muttering “We have work to do” on her way out. The lever, it turns out, released all the goo from the vats and made the entire chamber difficult terrain. Along with all the goo came the figures inside – identical, buck-naked Watchers all ready to scrap. A brawl breaks out near the lab doors. One of the Watchers closes and locks the doors, leaving Null trapped with most of the baddies inside the vat chamber. Thanks to Misty Step, Cade and then Silas both appear in the vat chamber to rejoin the fight.

On Null’s turn, she is suddenly overcome with violent flashbacks to her childhood – memories she did not know were there. Interspersed with flashes of light, she is struck with brief sequences of the atrocities her childhood self endured: experimentation, surgery, and child vs. child fighting pits. Null is rendered catatonic by the rush of trauma and drops her weapons. Silas sees this happen and immediately changes his plan to pursue Trolley – he could drag Null away but her weapons would stay and she would be defenseless. He will stay to defend his friend.

Lotty and Flynn finally catch up and enter the fray from the lab. There is a barrage of Lightning Bolts and Thunder Steps from the birthday suit brigade that downs a stunned Null and leaves Silas barely standing. Seeing that things are getting desperate, Cade lays down a totem and performs a Cure Wounds on Null. Null is still stunned but somewhat healed and now conscious, while everyone else (except Berrik) heals a bit thanks to the totem. Berrik presumably continues to have a great time in his demi-plane. We end the session there.

Act Three, Chapter Eight "$%&# these Meat Peepers" 2022-06-14

Flynn slammed his Urn against Cade and he disappeared inside.  Lotty, quickly realizing what it was told Flynn to hold off for a moment and gave her bag of holding to Silas, who was going to stay outside on watch, then asked Flynn to let her inside too along with Berrick and Null.  Inside was Lavish with pillows, carpets, a huka, a dead plant (which has been used as an ashtray), with tapestry lined walls, and it all smelled of cigar smoke.  Cade tried to revive the plant and Lotty tried to magically clean the place but neither magic worked.

Out from behind one of the curtains came a plump, half humanoid with stone skin, wearing silk, and had whips of smoke for legs.  Flynn introduced him as Mortikai, his long lost cousin.  Mortikai was upset since he thought he was Flynn's brother instead.  Mortikai thought highly of Flynn but seemed to have resentment over his living situation.  Cade recognized him as a Dao Genie.  Through this conversation it became clear that Morikai has been trapped in this Urn which Flynn found a few years previously with some other scrap..  They apparently became friends and trade favors, but Morikai has been keeping track and it is 7 favors by Flynn to 3,761 by Morikai.

The group had not been in there but 10 minutes when it seemed like they had relaxed for an hour.  The group exited the Urn shortly after and were back on the road to Pacapa.  Lotty and Null discussed Null's disguise and eventually went for Null appearing to be Lotty's sister.

Once they arrived in Pacapa, Silas noticed a lot of Aeonian technology was being used by the Exchange's security force, the "Peacekeepers" such as their flying discs and crossbows.

The group went to the Harbor of Haggling to find Fallah but she was not on her bench so went to the Seaside Shanty Tavern, where Null put the requisite 21 gold on the bartop and asked about rumor's.  The Hobgoblin bartender swiped up the money and told us that someone would contact us shortly.  While we were waiting, Flynn went and bought 10 deluxe cigars and Lotty stocked up on 3 ashtrays, then they went for food.

Null was very jittery by the time a youthful male elf just appeared in the empty chair at their table.  The group quickly realized it was Fallah.  They traded information and coin back forth to get the information out of Fallah.  The group told her that it is rumored that Nasandriel is in a swamp in the Wildlands and that Elric had the Demonocon exercised out of him by the Divine Pansopical and returned to the Underdark; along with 10pp.  Fallah told the group that:

  • Madame Trolley runs the orphanage and has for the last 20 years.
  • She runs a tight ship and employs some of the Watchers as guards for the children as she does not trust the Peacekeepers to keep the kids safe from slavery.
  • The BoS has never been inside or ever had need to investigate the orphanage.
  • There was an incident about a decade ago where a human child was placed there while it still had parents which were quite powerful.  The parents, who appeared human, eventually disappeared and the child stayed at the orphanage.

During the conversation with Fallah, it appeared to Cade that she understand the Ashen language.

While they were sitting there, Cade noticed that they were being observed by two of the peacekeepers.  The Peacekeepers even followed them as they left and headed toward an inn near the orphanage.

They eventually make their way to the Hole in the Wall Inn that is just down the street from the orphanage.  It is in the slums area of town and was in disrepair where Lotty even had to fix the front door.  They found a dead body out front, and when Cade pointed it out to the Peacekeepers who were following them they did not seem to care.

The inkeeper there, Vort, said there was only one room available and promptly yelled at another patron, Marv, that he was being kicked out.  The group was trying to make do with the one room with Lotty cleaning, Flynn trying to figure out where to ash his cigar, and Null franticly trying to plan when and how to visit the orphanage when they heard some commotion downstairs in the bar area.  Some Peacekeepers had shown up and were quizzing the patrons about some "security issue".  Cade, Flynn and Lotty went to investigate and were just told to return to their rooms by a female Peacekeeper.

At the same time as Cade, Flynn, and Lotty left the room, an illusion of Nasandriel shows up in the room and taunts the remainder of the party.  They chat for a bit then Nasandriel imitates Null to get them in trouble by shouting "Fuck the Peacekeepers".  Null pretends she said "Fuck these meat peepers" while trying to keen her Goggles of the Night.  The leader of the Peacekeepers does not really buy it and expresses that the Ashen Company is not welcome in Pacapa and should leave within a day.

The group decides to go to the orphanage and found it to be a nicer building in the area.  It had a little park outside, guards to protect the kids from being taken and sold to slavery, viewing the kids through the windows looked like they were happy, laughing, eating, enjoying themselves, and there were no bars on the windows.  The group talked their way past the guard to talk with Madame Trolley and are waiting in the front lobby for her.

Act Three, Chapter seven "Oh, Kel’zad Boy, the Books, the Books are Calling…" (04-06-2022)

After spending some necessary time recovering from the harrowing events in Beinya, Kel decides that the adventuring life is no longer for him, and departs from The Ashen Company amid fond farewells and a heartbroken, yet supportive Lotty. His act of retirement is to open a bookstore-café combo in a venture far more suited to his interests of reading and writing, with the added bonus of no longer being at risk for necromantic ritual sacrifice.

Even with the Ashen Company a member down, a short time later Null gathers them all during breakfast to make a request of the party – would they accompany her to Pacapa, and lend their aid in uncovering the tattered remnants of her unknown childhood?

The answer is a resounding “Of course, when do we leave?”

They’re interrupted by a knock on the door – Mira’s arrived with a scruffy, grungy, chain-smoking goblin named Flynn in tow. Introductions are made and Flynn explains that he’s heard The Ashen Company is looking for recruits and he’s eager to join.

During some lengthy discussion on whether now’s the right time to take on someone new and untested, the villa is besieged by a chaotic assortment of wannabe adventurers, and a very insistent fundraising regiment of the Sierrona Pipers.

Amidst the chaos, Flynn shows his unflappable nature by clearing out a particularly unruly half-orc from the villa, and The Ashen Company finally agrees to take him along to Pacapa as a trial run of his adventuring skills.

Before leaving town, the crew pays a visit to Kel’s café to say hello, and politely begs him to take down the poster he put up informing everyone of the empty slot in The Ashen Company’s roster. It’s now been, at least temporarily, filled by Flynn. Null makes sure she stops in to see Latharial and keep her updated as to what trouble they’re going to go seek out next. With Null and Latharial’s heartfelt moment interrupted by the Sierrona Foot Guard Marching Band (it seems to be a very festive day in town), The Ashen Company gather their horses and cart, and begin the trek to Pacapa.

During their first evening on the road, Cade asks Flynn if he can cast Moonbeam on him, to make sure Flynn is who he says he is. Flynn balks at the idea due to the risk of injury, but Berrik offers to cast True Seeing instead. He does, and checks the back of everyone’s neck. No new tattoos to be seen, and no unwanted guests, such as Vi, among them.

The next day the party reaches a fairly narrow bridge. Lotty and Nessie take the lead, followed by Berrik and Silas, Cade leading the horses and cart, with Flynn and Null bringing up the rear. The bridge is safe but their surroundings decidedly less so, and they’re beset by numerous, enormous wasps. Berrik is grappled yet again, and flown up sixty feet before Dimension Door-ing himself right back down to the bridge. Cade focuses his efforts in siccing his draconic spirit on the insects, and Lotty is quickly surrounded and poisoned, but holds her ground against being overtaken. Silas and Null make efficient work of the wasps surrounding the cart with some good old-fashioned violence while Flynn blasts several wasps with Synaptic Static, narrowly avoiding his own grisly end after being grappled.

Seeing their numbers decimated, the wasps flee. Only slightly worse for wear, The Ashen Company lets them go, and finish crossing the bridge before they decide to take a break. Silas offers to keep watch of the horses and cart. Flynn surprises everyone by producing a fairly nondescript jar and comically scooping everyone but Silas into it. The Sanctuary Vessel is incredibly cozy, and the perfect location to take a short rest before continuing on their journey.

Act Three, Chapter 6.5 - Downtime activities

Berrick

Spends time learning new spells and taking a copy of his spellbook.

Cade

Research on green dragon -there have been reports in the Wyldlands of a green dragon that has taken up residence of the swamps there.

How prevalent are Deas cultists - very little is known about the cultist, there's spattered history over the last 20 years mentioned about their followers, of note there is no public record of them.

Any organisations the cultist are connected to - very little other contacts, they exploit the undead as their servants.

Anyone trying to stop the cultists - the Devine Pansophical would be hunting these people in specific the Order of the Seal

What were they trying to summon? Some kind of angelic being, female in appearance.

Lotty

Feeling mentally and physically exhausted from the events in Beinya, Lotty is feeling glad to be home in Sierrona.

As she takes stock on how much trauma one gnome and endure she tries to keep her focus on Kel for the next few days, making sure he's OK and try to help him deal with any trauma from his experience.

Despite the luxury of their new Villa Lotty spends most of her day time at McFini's shop, making use of the workbenches and supplies but also just enjoying spending time with her family and the heart warming sounds of tinkering tools, hammers on metal and constant gnomish swearing (most of it coming from Lotty as she tries to enchant Cade's staff). Misusing Cade as an errand runner for supplies sending him across town several times for the best prices (and then back again with a note of guild reputation for an extra discount that she forgot to give him the first time) Lotty sets about crafting some improved armour, items and potions for the group. When Cade is busy crafting his scale armour he seems to let Lotty critique his near-perfect technique and even with all this; Lotty notes he still insists on paying her for enchanting a new staff that he uses to protect himself and the group. Silas also insisted on paying Lotty to enchant his armour when it's going to be used to keep him safe. Not being able to fathom why Cade and Silas would think Lotty would want payment for that she concludes her persuasive skills must be improving.

Enjoying her time back at the shop again she spots her first cousin, Uncle Thacker, going about his usual shop deliveries, thinking of how Arnon's involvement with the construct army has sullied the McFini name she used some of the gold from Silas to invest in his delivery services to expand them across the coast in return the good reputation to the McFini name.

Lotty spends an evening or two at ToMorrow's Folly, inviting Layla, Ella and Mira over for drinks and hoping to catch up on the latest town gossip. Noticing Null spending more time in the Folly Lotty tries to keep a distant eye on Null, not wishing to interrupt her process but to make sure she doesn't fleece the customers so much they don't come back.

Gossip - merchant noble named Tarren Evaldis has come in to providence in the absence of the Morrow cartel Evaldis has expanded his wealth considerable and is the most eligible bachelor around town.

There is a growing fighting arena in town that is thriving. LayLa & Remmi are dating and Aunt Ella is doing well & staying sober.

Null

Not able to forget how close the Ashen Company to losing it all, Null spirals a bit upon her return to Sierrona. She isolates herself and spends some time drinking and gambling at "ToMorrow's Folly", where she thankfully comes out on top. Fighting a hangover, she contemplates how she can be better prepared to keep her friends safe next time. She remembers how difficult it was to overcome the magical prowess of the necromancers. She also remembers how powerless she felt when she was under the arcane leash of the tattoo. Null returns to the villa and reconnects with Latharial, apologizing for her absence. She then gets to work learning all she can about how to minimize the efficacy of mages and lay them to waste beneath her blades, so that she never has to feel this way again.

Gains: Mage Slayer feat, 2 flying potions, 4 healing potions.

Silas

Silas purchases some new armour and asks Lotty to craft some enchantments on it. In payment for her work Silas funded both a collection of healing potions for the group and a loan start up for Lotty's business.
