Act IV, Chapter Twenty Seven "Imma eat it" (15-02-2025)

Having successfully reprogrammed the Machine of Infinite Regret the Ashen Company are given the opportunity to ask any questions they may have of the machine. Flynn steps up first and asks the machine what the most popular cheese is, a nice Gouda is the answer.

Down to business, Flynn asks “how did your world end?” The machine explains the greatest minds on it's world pulled together to create this machine; an entity to try and preserve life. However there was too much indecision and not enough action. When they realised they couldn't win the battle they decided instead to try and wait it out; sending their people out in status hives hoping that they will reawaken in brighter times. Asked about when the cycle was, what weapons they used, how close they were to winning the fight - The machine now exists outside of time a normal space but it theorises that its cycle was the one before the Ashen Company's current cycle, it explains they couldn't stand up to the overwhelming force even with their powerful rays of magical damage.

As the conversation continues the Ashen company learns that this machine was created by the One Who Watches to try and discover what the perfect world would look like, the One Who Watches talks to the machine about why it's cycle failed and why other cycles failed; in all the cycles before the peoples had reached some level of advanced magic or technology and all then go on to destroy themselves. The One Who Watches believes that the best chance for civilization to not kill itself is to kill it first, offering the chance to a few people to survive the destruction and become a deity of sorts to shepherd over the next evolution of beings.

The machine offers the Ashen Company a boon as reward successfully overcoming its challenge, they can be gifted a mote of cosmic rewriting, a single opportunity to rewrite an event in the last 100 years, or, the gift of knowledge. After a short deliberation of what they could change that wouldn't have disastrous butterfly effects they opt for knowledge.

The machine explains that the one who watches will watch over them, how they act and behave and if they impress - the One Who Watches will ask for help with a problem. All civilizations fail at some point, he uses the Wyrms Eternal to cull civilizations. The Ashen Company will have an opportunity to propose new solutions or be given the option to become shepherds of the next cycle, lastly the option to return to the fight and try to resist and defeat Erathax to allow for another cycle to continue.

As the group or consider this horrific and twisted logic Null has a realisation that the One Who Watches believes it's probably doing the right thing. Silas also has a thought that the One Who Watches doesn't have the Ashen Company to help make decisions and do the right thing.

As the Ashen company believe this building they hear ringing through their minds “ingenuity” from the One Who Watches.

Back out into the strange sea of floating structures and cities and worlds the group heads towards another strange looking structure. Inside they see a green pasture, flowers seem to be moving but they can't feel any wind, there's a smell of blossoms in the air but something just seems a little bit wrong. As the group start to walk towards a structure at the end of the garden the flowers all seem to be talking to each other, different volumes, different conversations, all layered over each other. Suddenly, in unison the voices all say “welcome to the garden of the dead, it is rare that living come, have you come to join us?”. After rapidly confirming that they weren't there to join them the Ashen Company co continue through the garden as quickly as they can. The air feels heavy here, uncomfortable, the ash and co begin t the ashen company begin to battle with exhaustion.

As they approach the stone structure in the distance Barrick casts Oasis but finds it doesn't seem to help much. Silas detects that the ground here is both consecrated and desecrated all at the same time, there is some kind of temple that looks druidic there's an overgrown cracked moon symbol, maybe this was in worship to some kind of nature or lunar God. Behind them the Ashen Company sees someone tilling the ground; a humanoid shape wearing a cowl with antlers protruding and yellow eyes showing underneath. There's a sword on his back but at the moment he seems to be peacefully planting seeds.

Null asks the stranger what he's planting and he tells her their souls, she asks to see one of the seeds and it felt strangely like one of her soul tokens. Without giving it maybe as much thought as she should, Null “eats” the seed. Null sees flashes of a young man's life, ending painfully had the destruction of his world. The rest of the group, watch Null die and a small plant grow immediately from her chest.

Good intentions and bad plans snap in to action-

Step 1 - Revive Null

Step 2 - Teleport plant out of Null's chest

Step 3 - Try again, this time also teleporting Null in the opposite direction

Step 4 - Push Null's lungs, heart and other assorted internal organs back in to Null with a Wish spell

Step 5- Revive Null

Lessons learnt = 0

There was more, the gardener had been there planting millions of seeds for 30,000 years, maybe there was something about a moon goddess and some healing eater but honestly the Null eats seeds thing was really the highlight.

Act IV, Chapter Twenty Six "Practically Perfect in every way" (09/02/2025)

The Ashen Company collectively hear the voice of The One That Watches in their heads; "You have gathered my attention, it has been quite some time since the cycle has done so well" Ashen Company are asked what it is that they're fighting for.

Lotty, angry as ever, steps up and shouts that they're fighting for everything and everyone. Having got the eye's attention it invites the group to enter into it's domain, neither as ally nor enemy but explains that walking through the rift - that it now produces - their essence will be unmade and remade.

Of course, our heroes will take every opportunity to save the world and walk on through the rift; as they do so the very fabric of their being is unmade. No longer bound by flesh and bone, they each see visions of other lives that could have been before coming back to themselves whole again but different.

Each of the Ashen Company take something from one of these former versions of themselves they have seen, becoming slightly stronger, slightly more adept, slightly more.

They find themselves surrounded by swirling masses of constellations, floating islands of broken worlds, statues of gods they've never known, the stars in the sky seemed not to twinkle but pulse in place.

The One That Watches tells the Ashen Company to look around it's domain learn what they can learn and if it is satisfied with the Ashen Company's progress it will grant an audience. It explains that time outside of this domain will not pass, nothing will change in the fight against air attacks.

Moving around this space seems to require willpower of the mind rather physical movement I think we all follow Flynn towards the largest structure he can see. Inside the structure is a large Chamber of mechanical structures, holographic equations seemed to fly across the skies as if information or messages were being transmitted. In the centre of the room there's a face of pure light watching as the ashen company walk in they present a calm and absolute voice and advised the group to define the perfect world warning that incorrect input will result in re processing.

Each time the Ashen Company present a facet of a perfect world; no hunger, no suffering, progression the face twists the ideals and like wishing on a monkey paw adds a less than perfect ideal to the mix. When the consequence ideal is reject the face sends each hero away with a dose of feeble mind. Several Greater restoration scrolls later Berrick, Flynn & Lotty decide to try and tinker with the machinery. Combining Berrick's intelligence, Lotty's mechanical skills and Flynn's language abilities they manage to reprogramme the machine to accept the answer that there is no such thing as a perfect world.

Less eager to feeble mind everyone the face asserts they will now answer any questions they group has.

Act IV, Chapter 25 "Deus Ex Oculus" (2025/01/25)

Hey so we're fighting Erithax in a decidedly less sexy humanoid form. Bro's still got an arsenal of unanswerable magical features with names like obscure energy drinks, such as "Punishing Duality" and "Void Blast". However, he does actually cast a spell once in awhile! Bane makes our lives pretty miserable for a couple of rounds, but Null is able to break his concentration with a card that does max Slashing damage. The fight continues for a little while, but eventually we get through Phase 2. Silas is the one who gets the killing blow, his slashes weaving an artful pattern of radiant steel into Erithax's scaly body. Buddy then doesn't have the dignity to stick around, instead fleeing through the fabric of space and time to presumably power-nap and manifest a hotter form.

So now our heroes are left on an empty ziggurat, with nothing but arcane runes and rolling darkness for company. We figure we should chase after Erithax, but also suspect that these runes will keep us from doing that successfully. It takes a few minutes of experimentation to lock down the best sequence in which to do this, but eventually the Berrik, Lotty and Flynn knock it out. Which is great, because that darkness is closing in fast. We all hold hands and Planeshift outta here and back to the Material Plane.

Once we're back and closer to the action, we all re-up our various methods of flight before moving into the crumbling, crashing ruins of Myridia. Battles rage around us and it's clear our allied forces could use a bit of help.

Berrik: Lobs the remainder of his star motes into enemy forces to provide cover for an entrenched group of allies. Adds a few Firebolts for good measure.

Null: Activates a "Rally" Fate card to allow a surrounded group of allies on their last legs the chance to instantly heal and fight on. Cracks a smile.

Lotty: Goes into the thick of a crushing melee between Zanidonians and enemies, then activates Rhone's Warcry to scatter the bad guys and give our allies some breathing room. Spots Latharial, who is missing an arm. Lotty gives her a Cure Wounds and tells L that Null is alive and fighting hard.

Silas: Summons a celestial that looks like Mordecai to lead our allies to victory.

Flynn: Swoops down to Latharial and casts True Polymorph on her, turning her into a Red Dragon. L then uses Giant's Might to double in size and begins to wreak havoc on every enemy within her considerable reach.

Live Null reaction.

The tide turns! Erithax's forces are losing! I think we crash land back on land at this point?

Suddenly Phase 3 of Erithax shows up and he's massive, like "I shit continents" massive. Why didn't he just start with this form? Well, first of all Erithax lives for the drama so jot that down. Second? idk.

Anyway, Erithax does a big ol' inhale and gets ready to end all of Altisha as we know it.

HOWEVER. Time then seems to stop for everyone except the Guardians, the Dawnbringers and the Ashen Company. Null feels a pang as she thinks of Vi. This feeling dissipates rather quickly as an enormous, galaxy-sized eyeball made of radiant flame appears in the sky behind Erithax. Everyone is confused. Berrik remembers a vision he had - This is "The One Who Watches".

Well okay then. What now? We stare in awe and wait for the Eyeball to make a move.
