Act 2 Chapter 6 - Deeper in to the sewers: Elric's letter home (22/05/2021)

Dearest Cousin,

I almost felt home recently since the first time I left the Underdark so many years ago. Following a quick trip through the sewers, this interesting band I’ve attached myself to decided to push on further and investigate the depths and caverns underneath Sierrona. It wasn’t an easy task getting down as we had just defeated a gelatinous cube and were being chased by black slimes – remember when we used to hunt their spawn as children to play with?

The vile things burned our rope as we were going down the cavern and a few of us went into a free fall – the ancient one I told you about turned himself into a spider (Does he defer to Lolth?) and Lotty (who for some reason thinks she’s saved my skin more than hers – we both know the truth) has an uncanny ability to climb down walls (again, am I surrounded by worshipers of the spider queen in league with my enemies at home?).

After several attempts by the idiot, the little demon and myself to stop our falls, I was able to cast a spell at the bottom to land with only a little damage. Experiment used his rod to hold himself in the air and caught Dolosius, while the ancient one made a spider web (again, unnerving) to get them to the safety of the walls of the cliff. When the group had settled at the bottom of the ravine, we rested.

I didn’t mention earlier that before we left the corpse of the cube, Cade and I pulled out items of value. We didn’t know what they were until Lotty identified them as we rested in the cave. Cade was able to acquire a ring of truthtelling (reminder to self to be very cautious about what I say when he is near). But my prize was beyond what I could have hoped for – a beautiful crossbow that cures my sensitivity to the sun! (You know I hate exclamation points).
Massinissa, you must know this is a treasure beyond compare – though I fear, what else may have come with it.

After our rest, we began to explore. The place reminded me of home, the home I long to return to when I can dispatch my rivals. It was, however, filled with a most noxious green gas that produced a cough after a time. It was then that we heard sounds of an enemy all around, but were able to determine is was but one big enemy – a venom troll.

It was a fight that tested our metal. The thing surprised us at first, coming closer to me than I’d like. Before I could move, Cade called in his panthers, and without realizing almost killed me, because it turned out that any damage done to the troll burst into nasty splatters on those around it. The idiot proved his worth no doubt. He twisted and turned, deftly slamming the thing with his glaive, this way and that. He has my respect in that vein. Cade also too proved value, keeping us all healed and fresh.

The fight went on for some time. We couldn’t put the thing down, until Lotty with all valiance and bravery had had enough and charged it to a fierce melee. Soon she went down and the thing went for the little demon. Cade was able to bring her up, and I soon split its spine in two and downed the beast, but as I was searching it, its resilience shined through, and it came back life to pursue the fight.

That little demon, seemingly weakest of the bunch carried the day. Fire sprang from his hands and he smote the thing to oblivion.
This day, each member proved their worth (and raised my suspicions once again). With the fight done, we found some gold for our work, but couldn’t locate the damn thing’s horde. We may need to investigate that once more before we leave.
For now, though, we needed to get out of that gas, it was having worsening effects on us all. Unless we can find a way to mitigate that, we may miss out on the troll’s treasures.

We made our way down to tier of caves below where we were. The gas was gone, but the rocks all around had that same eerie green color.
For now, I’m keeping a sharp eye out for my Drow brethren in this dark place. I’ve got to see them, before they spy me. My other eye is on this group, friend or foe, I don’t know, but thus far, these past months, they’ve not let me down.

Yours in Duty as in Deed
Elric

Act 2 - Chapter 5 - Back to the sewers (15/05/2021)

Notes from X2/Vic:

  •  Started in the Last Stand Inn in Sierrona discussing what the group has done in their down time and their reserach has revealed a few things
    • Remmi is still sick
    • Cade spoke with Daugn, the Loxodon Barkeeper, who said Remmi won't be back for a couple of weeks - Cade used the sending stone to send Remmi a message to say he wants to speak with him.
    • Cade found out that the Tully Island has vampires and undead.
    • Asked Mira about Remmi and the Divine Pansophical and Remmi but she was not happy to talk about Remmi. Discovered about the Divine Pansophical:
      • has grown in power recently
      • Closest branch is in Alya
      • They worship all of the pantheon
      • a soul infused gem will cost around 275-400 gold

    • Mira suggested some further research:
      • Ezra Espanoza, a powerful Wizard who wrote "the tomes of exaltation", professor of that field.
      • Book shop - Mordins Histories and Mysteries sells books.

  • Did some shopping:
    • Visited Orvil a dwarf who has taken over Endrea's smithing in the Omnimarket where Lotty purchased a breastplate
    • The group purchased Climbers’ kits (and were asked to provide their names to the shopkeep) and Healing potions

  • Headed to the sewers Got to a manhole cover with a picture of scales on it, Dolosius, Elric & Lotty remember from last time they had to put gold on the manhole and stand on it to get through.
    • Tried 1 gold - didn't work
    • Tried 5 gold - didn't work
    • In the end the group each paid 1 plt to get through.

  • Adventuring through the sewers the group found a colouring book the previously hadn't taken but X2 was very pleased.
    • Went East fought some black puddings (an upgraded version of the grey blobs the group previously fought
    • Rested and explored more
    • Found a giant gelatinous cube of ooze and we battled it
    • After killing it Elric took a chance of acid damaged, reached in and grabbed a crossbow. Cade wildshaped in to an ape, did the same and retrieved a ring but the damaged knocked him back to his usual form.
    • After the battle the group headed down a crawl tunnel with Elric, Dolosius and X2 climbing down a rope.
    • More of the black acid blobs came in to the chamber and started to pursue the group
    • Cade leaves his summoned beast behind to buy some time and moulds the tunnel closed behind them but not before some of the black pudding blobs' acid seeps through the caved in tunnel and broke the rope. Whilst Cade quickly shaped in to a climbing spider and Lotty cast Spider Climb in time the rest of the group begin to fall.

Act 2 - Chapter 4.5 A day in the life, Sierrona edition ( 08/05/2021)

Dear diary,

Had the strangest day at work today; I was working the dice tables (my least favourite, I much prefer dealing cards) all day and it was really slow all day.  Right before the end of my shift this guy comes in, kinda odd looking. He was human, looked like he was getting on in years, walked with a cane but it was as if the cane was just a prop, he had such a spring in his step and his hands moved quicker than mine at times. There was something odd about him, but I just couldn't put my finger on it, anyway luck was on his side! He cleaned house! Now, I'm not saying this guy was cheating but I swear he rolled snake eyes at one point but when I blinked there were sixes on his dice!

Bessie keeps telling me I need to get more sleep and stop working these double shifts, maybe she's right, maybe I'm getting too tired to pay enough attention. Anyway I tried to keep this guy at the table for as long as possible to win back some money for the house but he was gone so fast, he can't have even spent an hour at the tables before he left - and that's when it got really weird. I swear on the love of Aurora, this guy went outside and gave his winnings to this shaggy dog on the street! A dog, an actual dog and then they just disappeared around the corner, this guy talking away to a stray mongrel like it was is friend. I think Bessie's right, I need to get more rest. I can smell the stew she's cooked for supper tonight already, I think I'm going to call it a night and get some sleep.

Dear diary,

I hate going from working a late shift to an early shift, it really messes up my sleep patterns. Still at least it's quieter in the mornings at work, most people like to have breakfast before they start losing money! I was on the cards today and had another strange encounter; I was looking out for that same guy that came in yesterday, he's not a regular and he was just too lucky so I'm going to give the boss a nod if I see him again.

I guess I was too busy thinking about him to really concentrate on the dwarven woman that came to my table today, she was kind of odd - really tall for a dwarf but you know, I don't like to judge people that are a bit different, we all come in different shapes and sizes. I didn't really notice at first but her short stubby fingers seemed to move so quickly at times, I don't wish to stereotype people but most dwarves you meet are the hardworking, grafting kind, you don't see many dwarfs with a nice manicure but this lady was perfectly polished. Anyway, the same damn thing happened, I turned over the cards and I swear the joker turned in to a knave before my very eyes! Then, and this my dear diary is where it got even weirder, she up and left with all her winnings and I swear she met that same damn dog the guy gave money to yesterday! Anyway, I mentioned it to the boss, he thought I'd gone mad with tales of some mastermind canine sending in mind-controlled people to cheat the house but honestly - what else could it be! He’s got one of those enchanter types in and put these weird symbols and runes all over the place now to stop the punters using magic.

I thought we'd always had those protections but it turns out the boss' nephew is a bit of an artist and just drew some fancy shapes around the doorway to put people off and he was too cheap to get an enchanter in for the real thing.

I took the rest of the day off after that, the boss owed me one and gave me a 5 gold bonus for raising the issue. I think I'm going to take Bessie out for dinner tonight, it's about time I treated her and I heard that new place that opened up on the promenade does a really good steak dinner.

Act 2 - Chapter 4 - The Scramble for Earth Air Fire and Water (2021-05-01)

 Cade's Journal

I am not sure I made the correct decision in asking the group to join me on this adventure.  I was so caught up in the idea of getting those Goggles of the Night that I didn't ask the right questions at the start and Raz'i'el plays things very close to the chest.

Without knowing where we were going or what we were really after, we joined hands with Raz'i'el as she teleported us all the way to the plane of Elemental Chaos.  From what she said afterwards, this plan shifts each day, randomly, to focus on a different element.  When we arrived it was in the air phase, which seemed fairly benign.  We were able to move around it by thinking about the direction we wanted to go similar to how we moved in Raz'i'el's shop.  I was never sure if that had to do with Raz'i'el being there or something with the plane.  Raz'i'el said we were after an "Elemental Node" and she did a ritual to locate one and said it was about a 3 day trip away.

We started marching in the direction Raz'i'el told us and made pretty good time and I was able to have a nice conversation with Lotty about building me some additional arms now that I have a second magic staff.  I think that will be useful.

Some clouds were following us at one point that ended up being some Air Elementals and they tried to ambush us, but we soundly defeated them.  I was never sure if Raz'i'el would help us in combat but she held her own well.

That night I tried to build a dome out of vines to protect us while floating in the air, it took a lot of seeds I had collected recently to grow.  Unfortunately it did not provide the protection we needed as more Air Elementals showed up and blew us out of their with some wind attack.  We were all tied together so we didn't float away so it became a big mess of a fight, however we eventually won it.

In the morning the plane shifted to fire and at first I thought we were going to fall to our death but Raz'i'el saved us by making us float down.  We kept marching on the lava crust toward the elemental node.  At one point a pocket burst some lava on us but we were able to recover and fine harder crust.  An army of Fire Elementals with some larger creatures too passed us, fortunately Elric was able to use his ranger magic to help us hide from them.

On the second night, it was peaceful, I grew another dome but with no plants around I had to use the last of the seeds I had on me.  The night went without incident and I had a good conversation with Raz'i'el about Aeon.  I guess he has left the area but still has power an influence through his worshippers.  It is good he is still around and I now feel a stronger urge to return to worshiping him formally so I can help him gain more influence and turn back evil.

The plane shifted again, back to the element of Air, and we floated along toward the node.  Eventually we arrived and found the Elemental Node suspiciously unguarded.  It appeared to be on an alter protected by an Energy Shield but nearby and surrounding it was 4 orbs on plinths.  I tried to inspect with Gafros, my familiar, but when he touched the energy shield he was vaporized!  He keeps getting violently sent back to his own plane every time I summon him, I just hope it was not too painful.

It was all the party could do to stop X2 from running head long into that protective shield, he seemed hell bent on touching it.  Fortunately we distracted him by inspecting he orbs on the outside.  I had a whim to touch one of them with an element so I summoned Fire and the orb responded, it turned Red, and instantly 2 small Air Elementals and 1 big one wearing armor appeared near the Elemental Node and attacked us.

Thinking we were going to need to face a similar force each time we touched one of the orbs with an element, making 4 combats, we held back at the start pacing ourselves.  That was a mistake!  As soon as we killed one of them, they installed were summoned again for us to continually fight!

The group, thinking quickly, each spread out to light the outside orbs with different elements.  It was a mad scramble but Raz'i'el took the SE one first with a water based attack on it.  The original one I hit with fire was going out so Dolosius and Elric ran to the one on the NE corner to hit with Lightening.  Lotty smashed on the NW one with a fire attack.  As I ran down to meet X2 at the SW corner one to try to find a way to make an Earth element attack on it.

When I got there, I touched X2's weapon to make it do magic Acid damage hoping that would trigger the orb.  However, as soon as I did that he was stunned!  I thought quickly about dropping my magic Staff of Healing in order to take X2's weapon and do it but I knew if I did that I would lose the staff forever.  I am regretful of that selfish decision as it put my friends in harms way.

Eventually, X2 was able to recover and hit the orb and released the Node.  We all yelled to Raz'i'el to grab the Elemental Node quickly and she ran for it as fast as she could.  All of the elementals then turned to attack her instead.  The fight was crazy and disorganized but we eventually were able to group up on Raz'i'el to get teleported back to the material plane.

We all made it back alive, barely.  Raz'i'el paid us what she promised and gave us a bonus of the goggles I was after.  It made me feel really guilty as I essentially got the entire bonus just after I made the selfish decision to hold on to my precious staff of healing instead of dropping and losing it to help protect my friends.

After we settled down a bit, I noticed that I felt a little different... a little weaker... I am not sure why.  Oddly Dolosius seemed a bit stronger.  Raz'i'el said that sometimes other planes can have weird effects on people who visit them.  She said she would help if she could, but it might take some powerful magic to get rid of this feeling.

This whole endeavor seems like a bit of a gamble now, I am going to need to be more wary and ask more questions in the future.
